I travelled back from Spain yesterday with my US Citizen wife, travelling on my expired Green Card and extension letter. No issues in Madrid Airport, where the extension letter was recognised instantly by all airline staff (Iberia), and was through CBP at JFK in minutes...handed them my passport, green card and extension letter, and was asked no questions other than the usual customs questions as to any items we were bringing in.

Was really simple, and nothing to worry about either.

Thanks for this report.  There is a lot of unfounded fear right now (my opinion).  Your real-world experience will be extremely beneficial to other travelers.

For folks traveling to Nigeria with Extension letter, please go ahead, i assure you there is nothing to panic about, i used  Turkish airline . While trying to check in  I purposely gave them only my expired green card and the guy asked “do you have an extension letter” i smiled and gave it him, i was checked in within 5 minutes. Everyone at Istanbul airport knows about the extension letter, my port of entry at IAD was the easiest. The guy just said welcome. Hopefully this experience of mine is helpful to folks who are scared

My husband and I flew back from Japan on August 10th via Delta Airlines and had no issues. The lady at the Delta check-in counter did comment that his extension was longer than they usually are (they made the 751 extensions 48 months rather than 36 months). When entering into America the agent looked at his green card and extension letter, asked us how long we were gone and what we brought back, and that was it. All in all everything was really smooth.

Thanks for the report.  Glad everything went smoothly.  That lady didn't realize that extension letters have been 48 months for a few years.....

Flew back from Edinburgh, Scotland via Schiphol airport in Amsterdam (it was meant to be direct, thanks United!) yesterday with my wife and landed at ORD. The immigration officer told me that everyone with an extension letter needs to get sent to secondary because of process reasons 🤷‍♂️. I was in secondary for about 15-20 minutes, which seemed to be because of the volume of people there. An officer brought my documents out of a backroom and handed them to another officer who asked me to confirm my date of birth and then they sent me on my way.

Not the smoothest experience but not my first rodeo in secondary either.

Might be a new thing. I never went to secondary as conditional LPR on a number of trips I took. But it was few years back. I had extension letter too...
