The number of people illegally crossing the U.S. southern border has dropped 40 percent in President Trump’s first full month in office, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said Wednesday.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol reported that the number of illegal border crossings dropped from 31,578 to 18,762 persons. Kelly said border agents usually see a 10 to 20 percent increase in illegal immigrant apprehensions from January to February.

“The drop in apprehensions shows a marked change in trends,” Kelly said. “Since the administration’s implementation of executive orders to enforce immigration laws, apprehensions and inadmissible activity is trending toward the lowest monthly total in at least the last five years.”

I have to question the accuracy of the numbers in this article. How do they know these numbers are true? If people are crossing the border illegally, then they are crossing undetected. How does anyone know what the true numbers are? It's not like they give each person a number when crossing the border illegally. The numbers could be higher or they could be lower, I just don't see how anyone could say definitively.

C'mon guys. It's based on apprehensions. It even says so in the article. So chances are the actual numbers are much higher since these are just the number of apprehensions.

  I imagine legal immigration will be down under Trump as well. Tourism and work visa's too. I always said, with a guy like Trump, the wall becomes redundant anyway. More people will be trying to get out than trying to get in.
