Honestly don't see why this is a big deal. It's chess, who cares what the women are wearing? It's not like the headgear would interfere with the sport the way it does in athletics/outdoor sports. If they are letting women compete at all isn't that a step in the right direction? Baby steps! Better than nothing.

Those offended should boycott, if you don't want to boycott wear a hijab. My Western sensibilities are offended at the forcing of participants to wear them but if I were a female chess player that really didn't want to the easy choice is boycotting. There is something to be said about putting up with wearing a hijab and participating as well. A women's contest in the land where little progress for women's rights has been made is a bit of progress as well. Not sure what all the fuss is about.
