CANT GET SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER I-94 GOING TO EXPIRE. EXTENSION?

Hey guys. 

 

So we left applying for SS number till after our marriage. On a K1 visa. Went to SS office today and because our i-94 expires on 17 June it's outside of the 2 week time period it takes to get a SS number issued. I would like to volunteer and everywhere that I want to is asking for a SS number.  Illinois requires SS number to get  a drivers license. The guy at the SS office said I should ask for an extension on my i94 but that's not a thing. How do I go about getting my SS number? Do I have to wait for EAD now and apply for SS number through EAD? 

 

Any help appreciated.

No extensions are available for K-1 visa holders. It's 90 days max. You will need to wait until you have an EAD.

 

Edit: Soup kitchens, highway pickup, reading to children, etc. normally don't require any sort of documentation like an SSN.

I'm also in Illinois  and seems like you need to have EAD to get driver's license too.

That's the case in most states. But you may be able to get a State ID with an SSN without an EAD, if you at least want some kind of state identification in the meantime. We're going to the DMV once my husband gets his SSN (still waiting for approval of his app), because you do need an SSN for State ID, I believe.

 

Double check DMV offices in your area, as only certain ones service international residents.

As stated, you will now need either an EAD or green card before you can obtain a SSN. 

 

You could have obtained a SSN solely by virtue of being a K-1, and could have applied before you got married, but needed at least 14 days of validity remaining on your I-94, as you indicated.

Yea, I was searching what could you take as proof of residence and some people were saying the Ssn and Noa1 (aos) would help but then there are some that say you need to wait for ead or green card. Hopefully I can at least get the state ID, I'm gonna try. Thanks😊

I think State ID is much easier to acquire, so hopefully you will be able to in the meantime! Good luck!

I just checked the requirements for my state and they seem to require an SSN for a state ID unfortunately  Hope you guys have better luck!

Yeah, ours require SSN too, so we can't do that until Paul gets his.  But I don't think you need your EAD, so it still may be an option in the meantime until EAD arrives.

 

We couldn't add him to my bank accounts without his SSN either (I really thought they would), so most of our running around last week was beneficial to me and all my name changes, and not so much him (which is what we wanted to accomplish lol).

For banks ask for a w8-ben.  It's for a non-resident alien to be added to a bank account.  Once you have the SSN you file a w9 and change it to a resident alien.

@Paul & Mallory This is what they gave me at TD Bank, the w8-ben, so I could become a customer without SSN. Just a tip if Paul wants to at least get a bank account. My husband's bank requires SSN too though, although I have not tried to just walk in and ask for a w8-ben and see if they accept me anyway.

That's good to know! We wanted to just add him to mine for now so he can move his money over that's in Sweden; he didn't want to open a new account in his name only until he starts working. I may call my bank and ask about that to see if that makes a difference in adding him on.

No, there is no extension for I94 form at all. This is one of the reasons why we say to get the SSN as soon as you can and do not wait to get it.

I was able to get added to my husband's account without a SSN and transferred money into his account.

That's been the general consensus, including people who also went to my same bank, but for some reason they wouldn't do it. We asked two different bankers.
