One thing to keep in mind-Trump often makes grand statements which he later clarifies and limits. This may affect only new work visas etc. It will almost certainly not be the complete ban it sounds like now.

Like him or not, Trump is clearly not a details person. He conceives of a big idea, tweets about it and then has his people figure out the details.
 
In my opinion, his ideas often come from a place of sincerity, and whether you like them or not, he means well for the country (though obviously that is subject to what he wants for the country). In this case, he’s not wrong that there is some merit to at least temporarily curtailing some immigration, like maybe new H1B visas from China. The trouble lies in the details-there’s practically no merit to curtailing, or even delaying, spousal visas for Canadians already here AOSing, and obviously the same goes for many others in between the 2 extremes. 
 
The bottom line is that there aren’t any details yet because he hasn’t even thought them out, let alone vet them against the technicalities of the law-that’s not how he works. When those details do come out, they will almost certainly be a lot less threatening (to a lot of people) than they are now, just like the many other times he’s freaked everyone out.
