Sinka13 got a reaction from Immi_Enthusiast in SSN Card after arrival - not received more than 1 month later (IR5 visa)
We got stuck with the same situation. We requested SSN with DS260 application.
Arrived 3 weeks ago by IR-1 visa, didn't receive a card.
Called 2 local offices, one told you can't get a ssn without green card, another told us they can not find us in their database that means we need to schedule an in person appointment for the interview, but those appointments are scheduled only if you really need it. Giving an example that if you are enrolling in insurance or getting a job, an insurance company or employer can request a SSN and that can be a reason for an interview.
And the third phone call told us it might take up to 8 weeks to transfer data from DHS to SSA so just wait.

I think checking with USCIS seems like a good idea.
Any updates so far with getting their SSN recently after such issue?

    Hi everyone,

I was telling the story about not getting my SSN upon arrival.
So finally we got lucky resolution. We sent an email on Monday to Cory Booker's office, and within a couple hours we got a reply from them to provide more information and documents so they could help us solve our issue with Social Security Administration.

By the end of the day we got a call from the SSA manager and got an appointment for next morning.

I applied November 4th for my SSA but they weren't able to immediately confirm my immigration status, so they need to send a request to other facilities. It should be issued as soon as they get a resolution on that.

In case you are struggling to get an appointment over the phone like I was, try reaching local politicians they might really help.

In other good news, I received my green card in mail today. We entered October 3rd so it is pretty much a month of waiting.

Wow that's great that you were finally able to get this resolved! My husband just arrived in the US, so we'll see how many issues he has getting the green card and SSN. Thanks for sharing and congrats.

Just got home from our interview.  We passed.

There were about 80 applicants in the morning group today. I was the only US citizen attending the interview with their spouse, which wasn't surprising since the border has been closed to foriegners since March 22 due to COVID.

The interviewer swore me in along with my wife and her daughter since I was there.  Actually I answered most of the questions.  The guy interviewing me grew up about 30 miles away from where I live in the US so that didn't hurt I'm sure.

    Questions were:

How and when did we meet?
Does daughter have contact with biological father?
Do I live in Vietnam with my wife?
What was your last argument about?

That was pretty much it.  No questions for 14 year old daughter.  He flipped through photos and said we were approved.  It was as anti-climactic as I figured it would be since I live with her.  So we are moving to US mid-March.  Kind of sucks since our 2 year anniversary is April 28 and our medical expires April 19 so we will have to adjust status after two years but whatever.  Just glad it's done.

We were told we needed one of those things too... turns out you don't actually need it since we got ours without anything!

I think they put up these road blocks because of bureaucratic red tape...

Stay persistent on the phone and keep calling until you speak to someone kind again and they will schedule the interview in person..

    Good luck!

  10. Thanks

    This happened for us...

We were expecting the SS number and nothing arrived for months...

Of course, all the SS offices were shut down for in-person appointments...

But, after calling many times, we were able to get an interview in-person.

This is what you need to do:

#1 - call your local ss office to schedule an interview (keep calling until someone lets you because they are still doing these)
#2 - if you are unsuccessful at first, fill out an ss-5 form and mail it to your local office with your passport (they will return your passport to you in the mail)
#3 - once you receive the passport back, call the SS office again and ask to speak to a manager tell them you have an impending need for an SS number (for this you need a job offer letter or something similar)

Stay persistent with this... they are still doing interviews for new SS numbers but they won't tell you that they are!

We finally got ours after many attempts so I know firsthand that this works

    Best,
    Robert

It been a while since I posted here we got our visa in June and October 3rd we arrived in the USA. Things a going slow for now with quarantine around and not having any documents on hands.

However we got another trouble with papers, this time with SSN. After 3 weeks we were supposed to receive it, and we didn't get it in result we ended up calling SSA office to figure out why that happen, and apparently they have no information about my unless the one printed on my visa, so then need to schedule another interview, which can not be done unless you have urgent reasons to receive it. So now it seems our only way to receive it it either getting insurance which will request SSN for me or get an job employer to request it upon hiring.

Does anyone know anything about this and how better resolve it?

I wouldn't like to rush into first job just to get SSN. We were planning to get insurance, but not sure if they will request a SSN.

    Phew. So interview is done.
It was done in 1.5 hours. Feels pretty fast honestly.

First you go through security checks, then you get a ticket to the first window. Very nice lady got all my documents required for interview including proof of relationship. Then I was sitting waiting for the interview itself. I took around 40 minutes since there was lady before me. After her interview it took around 20 minutes to get to mine.
Got called to the window, the was a guy asking questions and lady behind him checking on him.
    Questions where
Tell me about you husband. Didn't really know what to say so just told them random facts about him lol, he asked also to tell him how we met, when we started dating and living together.
Other questions were what are our plans in the US, who is my sponsor, if I know his family. That's pretty much it.
Since medical result wasn't sent there yet we got AP and waiting for the results.

    Thank you!
Oh it's all not that fast for us we both live together in Ukraine so we don't rush going there yet, also I have a work contract here till the end of summer so we can't move earlier anyways.

We plan to get tickets around mid September, since it's impossible to predict what borders will be open and move early October to US. We just plan to go to JFK and then his family will pick us up

As for quarantine as far as I know the only way to go from Ukraine to US is by going to Istanbul and then to NY and entry from Turkey doesn't require you to quarantine at the moment. Flight to EU are restricted to people who are citizens or lawful residents or are in a list of permitted countries so it's not an option for us (there might be a way to have like a transit thought EU but since it means mandatory quarantine for 2 weeks in the US we haven't considered that route as an option)
