tom3227 got a reaction from Ben & Katy in I'm abandoning my GC. What if I don't show up for the interview? I want to return to Australia
I am no longer married, applied for the i-751 with a divorce waiver. I don't anticipate ever coming back to the USA to live. Having the citizenship means I'll have to file taxes forever to the US gov, and pay taxes to the IRS in every deal I ever make in the future. Screw that

tom3227 got a reaction from valentinasc in I have a pending i-751 and I want to abandon my GC. Can I file I-407 while in the US? How long do I have to leave after filing?
I am not a long term resident (> 8 yrs) so there's no chance I am a covered expatriate, meaning I will not be subject to an exit tax.
Also, shout-out to the sloths at USCIS for taking 36 months to process an application and made me realize I don't wanna live in the US. You guys are the best!

Good luck. I hope you find happiness back home. I know that Australia is nice!!!! I enjoyed visiting there in 2015....Sydney, Uluru, Cairns, snorkeling off the Great Barrier Reef. I had a wonderful time..... I plan to go back....

The US is a great country. Housing here is 1/3. Material lifestyle is way better in the US. Australians are "poor". They live in a $1.2m home that doesn't have a laundry room. They hang their clothes outside like cavemen. Their $1.3m home don't have water connection to the fridge, so they take ice from the ice tray like Neanderthals. But yeah, beaches are great.

It's easy to move back. I have dogs so I have to wait 180 days anyway. Booking flights 6 months in advance in easy and cheap (1k instead of 10k now). The main reason for giving up is that if I don't I'll have to pay capital gains to the US for the rest of my life. Screw that. I love america and the US is a great place to live, but is't not worth 20% of my capital gains for the rest of my life. Plus, australian beaches

No. You must leave the US before you can file the I-407: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/forms/i-407instr.pdf
Who May File Form I-407?
Form I-407 is used by lawful permanent residents who are outside the United States or at a Port of Entry who want to abandon their LPR status.
Nope. That is incorrect. Only if OP had 1) already abandoned LPR status per the law; and 2) last entered as a nonimmigrant or was paroled-in; could OP file from inside the US: "Form I-407 may also be used by individuals who were admitted into the United States as non-immigrants or paroled into the United States after abandoning a prior LPR status, and who now want to record that prior abandonment of LPR status."

It looks like you can send everything by mail, so it appears you can do it while in the US.
Good Luck!

My understanding from reading this page and the instructions, is that you need to file it from outside the US. So you can leave and mail your documents from Australia. I would take a close look at the IRS requirements linked at the bottom of the page to tie up loose ends before leaving.

Also health in the US is mostly private and there are economic incentives to report more COVID cases, whereas NZ has a public health system and these incentives are not present.

New Zealand is a tiny island with homogenous and compliant demographics, very small population, low density, and fewer infections to begin with.
The USA is massive, mixed, not compliant, with ultra-high density (NYC), and had a huge numbers right from the get go.
Comparing the two is just dumb.
