I got my interview date! It says to bring proof that I registered with selective service, but I was 31 when I was granted a green card and came into the USA to immigrate. Is that a mistake on my interview letter or was I supposed to register? I remember trying to register but they wouldn’t let me because of my age. It was almost a decade ago. Did anything change with regard to that rule?

Interview is scheduled for February 18, 2022.

    Friends,
I became a US citizen yesterday. Naturalized through marriage and 3 year rule
I’ve included my timeline as well:
June 18 Filed and biometric reuse
July 3: Case is being actively reviewed
November 9: we scheduled your interview
    December 8: Interview
Interview went well and I had a same day oath ceremony.
    Civics Questions:
Name one of my state’s senators
Name one of the longest rivers
What ocean is on the west coast
Name one Native American tribe in US
    Name one branch of government
Name the highest court in the Land

Sentence I had to read was “who can vote in a federal election”

I had to write “citizens can vote”

Everyone keep the faith. I know that’s so hard to hear especially for those of you who are still waiting. That has to be very frustrating. Please know we’re all in this together and the time is going to come. I know I will be able to call all of you “fellow Americans” very soon.

Hello @bsd058  as @millefleur pointed out it is more about freedom of movement for most duals.   In the case of the Philippines she automatically loses her citizenship when she acquired her US.  The same would apply if she was Chinese.  Philippines allows her to require it but if she was Chinese she would not.  If the US were to ban dual then I am not sure she would have naturalized, especially in the covid climate. For example it is easier for her to travel back to see her family with a Filipino passport.

I used to teach a Business Ethics class.  We would pontificate about the differences between morals, ethics and laws.  Laws never keep with technology or "reality". So while there is an "ethical" question with a dual allegiance in the case of US Law it is not illegal.  In our case I had to decline certain business opportunities (Federal Government related) because I was married to a Foreign National.  My brother even had this come up in a security review while he was in USAF.

So now we are wrapped up and Mrs Mary is now a US Citizen, will regain the Filipino status and because she married me - still has a Mexican Green Card!

100% this. It's about freedom of movement for the vast majority of dual citizens. Getting citizenship is really the only way to be able to go back and forth between the two countries.

In Europe, apparently some EU countries will issue the European "green card"/residence permit to EU non-citizen relatives and allow them to just come and go as they please, without actually having to live in that country. My Italian friend's Russian wife has this card for Italy even though they actually live full-time in Russia. This enables her to just come and go from Europe as she pleases, so she doesn't need Italian citizenship through her husband, she flies through the Schengen zone without any questions. The US GC does not allow that. You have to actually physically live in the US to maintain your GC. Because of that, the only choice for free movement is citizenship. If the GC allowed people to just come and go, there would probably be a lot fewer people applying for citizenship.

From my view is, if the US government had a problem with it, they wouldn't allow dual citizenship. The way it works is sort of like this: if a dual US citizen is traveling/living in the country which you also have citizenship with, and let's say you get in trouble with their local laws and end up in prison there, the US government cannot act on your behalf or represent or accompany you because as a dual citizen, you are also subject to that country's laws. The US government can, however, use diplomacy and mass media to highlight your case and escalate it to a diplomatic talking point with the other country. There was a famous case like this involving dual US-Israeli citizen Jonathan Pollard.

I actually thought about this a lot because my husband is a Russian-American dual citizen where something like this could actually happen, lol. Also, having dual US citizenship does bar the person from a lot of other rights that sole US citizens have: ability to get a security clearance and run for president. Dual citizens can still get elected to Congress, however. And indeed, there are many dual citizen Congress members. It doesn't seem like the US cares that much about it unless you cross the line into actually spying or somehow betraying US interests (which a green card holder could also do as well, actually.)

@bsd058 I think everyone who decides on dual citizenship asks themselves this question at some point. I think a lot of people who choose to become dual citizens think about being able to travel easily, own property in either country, or stay for very long periods of time in either country without needing to apply for visas.

Mary had her interview this morning in Phoenix.  It took about five minutes after waiting about an hour.  I was outside in the car and she called me crying; I thought some disaster happened.  Took about 45 minutes then she and 5 other were naturalized.

We have a trip to London next week so the only Passport Offices with openings are Honolulu, San Juan and El Paso!  We will work on reacquiring her Filipino Citizenship when we return.

    Thanks for all the support!

Passed my Citizenship test today. It took 15min altogether. The interviewer asked me 6 questions and I answered correctly for all of those. She asked me to read a sentence and write down a sentence which was the similar to the question she asked me to read 😂 Then she updated my personal info specially as I had the change of address.I was expecting a same day oath ceremony.Unfortunately the state of Massachusetts stopped doing the same day oath ceremony.I have to wait til next month to complete the oath ceremony and Get my certificate. That was the only depressing part.
At the end I am happy to know that I almost a step or half a step away to the final Goal.It has been a Long journey Best of luck to everyone and Thank you visa journey for being the ultimate guide in the whole process.🇺🇲

The point is the time frame means nothing. It's just an automated system that changes the time frame whenever the time frames are updated by USCIS. Mine started out at 15 months, then went to 11 months, and counted down each month until it hit 9 months, and then shot back up to 13 months after I had my biometrics appointment. It's just a guess based on a faulty algorithm. So many receive approval/denial long before their time frame is up.

My status finally updated this morning, I cannot believe it. My case is just like the case we discussed. Waiting for 5.5 months since interview, 8th floor. My filing date was March 2020.
I’ve tried to contact the local office, senator, congressman, and Ombudsman; filed an online inquiry; wrote to the White House, but I haven’t heard anything back. Maybe they are still in the process now.
It’s finally our turn. Almost there. Blessings.

    I filed my N400 06/01/2021 with a pending
I - 175 which I filed since January 2020 but was ready to be scheduled for interview. I was expecting a combo interview since my N400 is at "We are actively reviewing your case". But fortunately my I-175 updated from "A new card is being produced" on 10/22/21 to "Case is Approved" on 10/25/21 without any interview. Right now I'm waiting for the card in my mail. Hopefully my N400 interview be scheduled ASAP.... ✌️✌️✌️

    Hello everyone,

Journey over! I am now a proud citizen of the USA!

    short version:
    filed June 1 under 3 year rule;
Interview September 8 (notice came in late July) at Cleveland field office.
As with my i-485 the interview was held on time and professionally. Very straightforward, started with the civics test followed by reading/writing, then we went over my application, made a small change to my employment and got recommended for approval. Approval came by the time I got downstairs. All in all it took about 45min including wait.

Oath got canceled the next day (I believe because the oath in my city would be too short notice for the mail to arrive, but that's just a guess) and eventually scheduled the 29th for October 19.

I am grateful my journey is over, I personally cannot complain about timelines but I know I am very lucky in that regard.
Good luck to everyone; the destination really is worth the journey in this case.

(for anyone wondering, any time I checked online my estimated timeline was about 11-13months)
