I recently traveled on the Dreamliner so the configuration of this plane looks very similar. He was sitting in premium econ, directly behind business.. so the bulkhead row of seats right by the exit door. I imagine it might be a reinforced section. BTW... Boeing has major problems with the Dreamliner's RR engines and also the GEnx engines.

I had a buddy who retired off the 727 at United Airlines.  In 2000 or so, I asked him whether he preferred the above engines or Pratt & Whitney.  He mused, muttered, "Not a whole lot of difference," and finally concluded, "I like General Electric engines the best."  I don't remember if he elaborated.  I wonder now whether engine quality has declined since then.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

The RR Trent 1000s have been the most recent problem and it's why I had a terrible time getting tickets, having my flights moved constantly, and long delays. The Dreamliners are comfortable amazing planes but the engines were supposed to last a lot longer than they have, which has caused other potential dangers and defects to crop up. Many airlines had to ground fleets or do weird rotations so they could get them maintenance. Unfortunately there were times where no parts were available and the fixes were crazy. I'm not sure that what is currently wrong with the Trents could cause the issue with this plane, but if it did then it's very serious indeed.

I don't think so.  RAT deploys from loss of normal electrical power (which CAN be caused by a dual engine failure), but...

Had the engines flamed out, and with gear down, that thing would have dropped MUCH more rapidly.

Just returned from India.  It was kind of surreal to be at the airport (Chennai, and Mumbai) the day after this happened.  I was flying Indigo Air, and our flight from Chennai to Mumbai was delayed a little more than 3 hrs due to a sick pilot.  This caused us to miss our connection to Paris, and eventually Detroit.  Indigo Air and Air France customer service in India was horrible, finally worked through our travel agent to fly through London.  Got to ride in my first 380.
