How to get the Tax Transcripts? (Merged threads)

Hello. My N-400 interview is on 3/21/24. 
 

I need to order tax transcripts. I have not filed a Federal Tax Return for 2023 yet so I would order the years 2018-2022? If so, do I get this from the IRS site? What is the best method to get them before my interview date?

 

Lawyer and I did not submit any tax info when we filed. He recommended to wait. I did not get RFIE/RFE either.

Create an IRS account online, then download RETURN transcripts.

They are available as soon as you have access to your online account.

1.  Yes.

2.  The transcript will be ready in a couple weeks after filing electronically.  If not, just take a copy of the 2023 tax rerun instead of a 2023 transcript..

Does it look bad if I decide to file my return for 2023 after the interview date? What do you suggest?

They won't be expecting to see the 2023 taxes until after April 15th, 2024. That is the filing deadline. If you have them when you go in March, cool, if not, they are not going to worry about it much. I took the most recent 3 years to my wifes N400, and they just asked her if she has been filing taxes, they didn't even look at them. The N400 interview will be the easiest of all of them, at least it seemed to me. Study the questions and answers, and you should be good to go.

I thought it’s suppose to be last 5 years?

 

I use the 2024 Citizenship app to study.

I heard that they usually ask the easiest questions like who is the current president of U.S or Name one U.S national holiday. Is that true?

Do they ask extra questions besides the Yes/No random?

The IRS doesn't require the individual income tax returns for 2023 to be filed until (at the earliest) April 15th, 2024...several weeks after your N-400 appointment.  Feel free to bring anything you want to provide for the 2023 tax year.  If you have already done your taxes, bring copies of your return and supporting documents (W-2, 1099, etc.).  If they ask about your 2023 return and you haven't done it yet, you can assure them that you plan to file on schedule.  You can certainly look and see if the 2023 transcript is available, but do not count on it.  (No one knows the IRS' schedule for such things.)

 

You don't "order" a tax transcript.  Once you've logged into the IRS web site, if a given year's transcript is available, you can click on it and download it immediately.

 

For a data point, I filed our federal return earlier this week.  The only 2023 transcript currently available to me on the IRS website is the Wage & Income Transcript.  If I create it, it says "No return of record filed."  It's too soon.

 

Take 2018-2022 with you.  You got this.

Yes. 

You're not expected to file 2023 taxes until April 18th 2024.

Create an online account with the IRS, download the Tax Return Transcript. It asks you the reason for your request, you should say "immigration"

You'd take all the tax forms (w2, 1099s, 1098s, etc) to the interview with you. The transcript takes a few weeks to upload (FYI I filed on 01.26 and it still says N/A not available)

No. It's within your rights. Don't bring it up, but if they do ask about your 2023 taxes, simply tell them you haven't filed yet.

It depends. I believe @Loren Y 's wife applied under the three year- rule, so she needed the last three years. I applied under the three year rule, though out of a word of caution I brought the last five years of my tax returns. The officer never requested to see them.

 

If you are applying under the five year rule, then you need your last five years of tax returns, not counting 2023.

Interview was today at 8:00 am at the USCIS Columbus Field Office. We went with my husband, but at first the officer only called me in. 
I had a few corrections/ update to make, so before I was sworn in I let him know of this. He said it was ok, not a problem. So he swore me in, then started with the civics test: 

 

- What did MLK junior do?

- What are two US national holidays?

- two political parties

- why did the colonists fight the British?

- Name one tribe

 

Forgot the other question. 
The reading was: who elects Congress?

Writing: People elect Congress. 
 

Then we went on to the application. I made the changes / updates. 
For the weapons training question, I marked “yes” because I own a gun, which my husband has been teaching me to use. I explained this, he changed the question to “no” and he added “informal”. 
 

After I was done, he called my husband in, asked him when we got married, my full name, my DOB, his marital status. And that was it! He printed off the paper recommending me for approval on the spot. 
It felt more like a casual conversation, he was professional but friendly. 
 

Funny note: he asked me how long 751s are taking because officer’s wife has a pending one! 😂😂😂
