Sponsoring "lazy" uncle's i-130

Hi all,

Looking for your opinion on this situation.

My uncle's mother has petitioned a i130 for him and it has been approved after a long wait.

He recently asked me, a LPR, to be his financial sponsor.

Says that his mother has already sponsored 2 people  and cannot sponsor him.

I would sponsor him but there are two things that make me hold and think:

- I have recently submitted a i130 for my wife to join me in the US, and has such I'll also be her financial sponsor. Can I sponsor 2 people ? what are the rules and limitations?

- My uncle is French speaking, and I dont know how fast he'll be able to integrate, even in his home country he has not been much active professionally, and has been mainly been slacking even though he's had opportunities to work. I'm sure he'll be able to do some odd jobs here and there when he gets here but can his success to succeed here harm me ?

Unfortunately, his mother is the primary sponsor so she'll need to fill out another I-864 as a sponsor. If you decide to help, you'll be a joint sponsor. You can sponsor as many as you want as long as you have the income to meet the requirements for the people you are sponsoring or joint-sponsoring.

Your income and your assets are the only deciding factors to be the sponsor for any number of people.

In general No because uscis rarely goes after the sponsors if the sponsored immigrant uses public benefits. However by signing i864, you are signing an agreement with uscis that they can come after you to recuperate any public benefits used by your immigrants. There are certain situations when your responsibility goes away.

Is it just uscis though? I am sure I recall a poster here a few years back who was on the i864  hook by her state for her …son? stepson? who refused to work or naturalize or leave the US, and was using public benefits. And there was pretty much nothing she could do other than pay up.

Anyway regardless of that, I don’t think OP should feel pressured into signing an i864 for someone he doesn’t want to. Especially what if his wife sponsors family members in due course and he wants to be able to help out there instead?
