And this is why I cringed when I voted for Trump. I fully support his polices and he had this country on the right track. Yes the media was unrelenting with him. Yes I would take him back in a second right now...but

 

He needs some class. Those remarks are so classless and uncalled for. He made Colin Powell's death all about him.  If you agree with what he said , know was not the time. Just amazing a public figure could be such a uncouth jerk.

I agree with you completely.  This is why I think DeSantis would make a better candidate in 2024.  He sure would be more electable.

I agree. Someone with his polices, who is not an narrsistic jerk . It impaired his ability to lead.

 

I know there is the " Don't ever criticize the Fuhrer crowd"  but this is indefensible.

I am not one to speak ill of the dead and I would criticize Trump for that but he didn't say anything that is factually incorrect.

I think we all knew Trump has little tact, and I am think he knew he was going to be lambasted for his comments, but considering how he was treated, he probably felt what the heck.  As to canonizing anyone that is also a bit indefensible as well.  Powell appeared to be a good person that did some good things and also made some poor decisions, he should be remembered for all of them.

This is similar to the problem I see today with a lot of our young people as they criticize historical figures.  Today's youth look at our founding fathers and don't see the good they did.  In order for someone to be praised, they need to be absolutely perfect; and they mean perfect by today's standards, not the standard from their time period.  Too many of us, both on the right and left, will only praise someone if they are ideologically perfect.  And that's not going to happen.

 

With Powell, when we look at him as a historical figure, we should see the good he did and, as you said, acknowledge the poor decisions.  But we should also look at the totality of his life, including his accomplishments which are also very impressive.  But that is looking at him as a historical figure.  When we consider him immediately after his death, we should definitely focus more on the positive; as any normal person would know.

Normal being the key word. Just cause something is True does not mean it's always  appropriate to say it. Trump took an opportunity to act with some class and leadership,  and turned it into a narrsistic tirade about himself. 

 

It's shocking how some deify Trump or any leader for that matter, to the  point valid criticism is not tolerated.  I am sure Gen. Powells family really appreciated his remarks in their hour of sorrow. 

 

 When someone dies its generally considered a time to be respectful and provide comfort to the family, not act like a petulant child.

 

I was shocked to see some of you remarks, trying to justify his behavior.  I know you guys know better.

So you are advocating for lying?  

 

Just my opinion, but if I want people to say nice things about me after I am dead, then It is my responsibility to DO THINGS WHILE I AM ALIVE to cause people to want to respect me.

 

People who say nice things about me after I die, just trying to be polite (not speaking ill of the dead), are NOT my true friends, nor do I care what they may say about me.

It really is shocking that normal decency isn't normal anymore.  Just because someone disagrees politically doesn't make them a bad person.  I have friends that vote the opposite of me on everything but I could easily speak at their funeral and list countless wonderful things about them.  

 

Colin Powell may have been *gasp a RINO but that hardly makes him a bad person.  He may have supported the "wrong" people during elections but, so did a lot of my friends.  It should be so easy to talk about Colin Powell after his death.  All Trump had to do is say a few sentences about how Powell served his country.  That's it.  It wouldn't be a lie and it is the decent thing to do.  And doing the decent thing shouldn't be that hard.  But for Trump it seems impossible.

Don't disagree with you, but if a person didn't realize the type of person Trump was prior to him getting elected, they should have come to realize it shortly thereafter.  The man has no filter.
