Hi all,

I've noticed in the list of documents to bring is "

  • Photocopy of police certificate of good conduct for all countries the beneficiary has resided in for more than 6 months since the age of 16.

I stayed in the UK for 6 years at one point when I was studying there.
Does this mean I would need a police cert from the UK too?

I will be the contrarian and answer “maybe”.  I know from experience this varies by both embassy  and case.

The general advice from VJ is a police certificate every place the beneficiary has lived in for more than 6 months since she 16.  But then the embassy told us:

-Police Certificate: Original certificate & notarized translation, plus one photocopy. Police certificates must be obtained from each Myanmar Township where you have resided for six month or more past the age of 16, and all other countries you have resided for over one year

Well so much for the 6 month rule.  And that eliminated one country we didn’t have to deal with, but nonetheless my then fiancée had to spend several weeks touring her country and south east Asia getting police certificates.

After that was done we submitted the DS-160, did the medical examination, and informed the embassy we were ready.

The embassy responded eventually with an email

After reviewing your case, you are required to bring the following documents on your interview date.

...

Original and English notarized police Certificate from Nyaung Shwe

Nyaung Shwe being her city of residence at the time.

Thinking this was a mistake she brought the other translated police certificates to the interview.  The embassy wasn’t interested in them.  We still keep them as monuments to thousands of dollars spent following incorrect advice.

Later in the USA I asked my wife’s immigration  lawyer (whom we used for adjustment of status) why the embassy didn’t want all the police certificates.  The lawyer said it was a non immigrant visa; police certificates from any where but current residence are not required.

So my advice is to provide what the embassy requires and no more.

@Mike E Thanks for sharing your experience.

But I find that strange. Mine does mention "lived more than 6 months" as well.

I did live in the UK for 6 years technically during studies and when I was on a working visa.
and I did write to my embassy that it may take a couple of weeks to receive that, and they said it was ok and I could send it to them later.

I'll only have two - one of my origin country and one from the UK anywhow.

If you were over 16 and lived anywhere else for more than 6 months, then you will need one. That’s a rule of thumb.

  • 2 weeks later...
