Troops are patrolling streets in major cities and communications are limited. The top army commander is now in charge and a one-year state of emergency has been declared, army TV announced.

The move follows a landslide win by Ms Suu Kyi's party in an election the army claims was marred by fraud.

She urged her supporters to "not accept this" and "protest against the coup".

In a letter written in preparation for her impending detention, she said the military's actions put the country back under dictatorship.

The Biden administration is saying that they will "take action if the coup is not reversed". So I wonder what they plan to do against Myanmar/Burma?

Yes, I am sure China might be very interested in any response from the US or anyone else especially if it includes anything on the ground.

   Like most "real coups", it began with the willful failure of the losing side to accept and recognize the official legitimate election results.

It is interesting as to how much unfettered power the military has in Myanmar.  The constitution there guarantees a quarter of legislative seats to the military as well as some powerful executive level departments with little oversight by the civilian leadership.  Of course to change the Constitution requires a 75% yes vote from their legislature.

   I think that's a common factor in many places where we have seen this type of thing happen. This is often business as usual, no blood shed, no protests, and really, minimal risk to the perpetrators. I would hate to live somewhere where this was just seen as a normal outcome of an election.

The warning to US nationals came from an office of the US embassy in Yangon. 

There are indications of military movements in Yangon and the possibility of telecommunications interruptions overnight between 1:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. U.S. citizens in Burma are advised to shelter-in-place during the 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. curfew hours.

Sounds like the violence is ramping up.

 

Myanmar sees deadliest day as 38 protesters killed

 

UN envoy to Myanmar Christine Schraner Burgener said there was shocking footage coming out of the country.

 

She also said it seemed likely security forces were shooting with live bullets.

 

Mass demonstrations and acts of civil disobedience have been taking place across Myanmar since the military seized control on 1 February.

 

Ms Schraner Burgener said at least 50 people had now been killed "and many wounded" since the coup began.

 

She said one video clip showed police beating an unarmed volunteer medical crew. Another showed a protester being shot and very likely killed on the street, she said.

 

"I asked some weapons experts and they could verify to me, it's not clear but it seems that the police weapons like 9mm submachine guns, so live ammunition," she said.
