The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday quietly removed bizarre guidelines for using the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a potential treatment for the new coronavirus. The unproven treatment has been repeatedly hyped by President Donald Trump in spite of the warnings of Dr. Anthony Fauci. 

The CDC published "highly unusual" dosing guidance based on "unattributed anecdotes rather than peer-reviewed science" last month amid pressure on federal health officials from Trump, Reuters reported. The agency now appears to have quietly removed those guidelines from its website this week

I know saying he's controversial is an understatement, but my wife, as a lupus patient who is already on this, found this interview interesting:

Oz said he wants to hear from anyone diagnosed with lupus or rheumatoid arthritis who take hydroxychloriquine to treat it and who have been diagnosed with COVID-19. He asked his viewers to share their story with his show.

Oz said he wanted to know whether any of Wallace’s lupus patients on hydroxychloroquine got COVID-19.

“My interest was to find out could it actually prevent people from getting sick because normally, you’d think lupus patients are immunodepressed. They'd be more likely to get sick from COVID-19 but he has no patients in his practice, and he is part of this experience we are looking at,” Oz said.

“We’ve now run 9 million insurance records through, identified 14,000 people who are like these patients. They have lupus. They’re taking hydroxychloroquine. Zero of those patients so far have COVID-19. I don't want to over interpret that. This is a tiny little biopsy of America, but working together with CMS, and we've gotten a lot of support from their leadership. Seema Verma’s fantastic. “The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, they’ve gotten together,” he said.

“Our partners at Share Care are writing the numbers, and I want to get to 100 million Americans and confirm what the rheumatologists are observing, which is it doesn't seem right, but their patients aren't getting COVID-19, and maybe there's something there that’s a clue to us, because if that's true, we might consider using this at the trials with doctors and nurses and people who are at risk of getting this infection,” Oz said.

Wouldn't immunocompromised people be more careful and stay away from possible infections more than others, knowing that they're more at risk of infection?

  I think the difficulty with this is the number of asymptomatic infections. As high as we already suspect that to be, I think at some point they are going to find out it's even higher than that. So it becomes very hard to accurately report who had something when more than half of the people who did have it don't even know they had it. 

 

  That doesn't rule out that hydroxychloroquine might help some people, but it also becomes very hard to rule in that it helps the average person.

Well of course.  But politics aside (which is ALL that the issue of HCQ really is), anyone of us, if they are honest with those around them, would take ANYTHING they thought would save their lives, no matter if the Orange Man, Ghandi, or E.T. suggested it.

Yes, and so would people with other conditions, yet many of them have gotten infected. It's more specifically lupus that they're trying to figure out how many people with the condition and on this medication have been infected. My wife has been locked in the house for a whole month now, hasn't gone farther than 4 feet away from it, starting to climb walls. Not everyone is as careful either, though. Not everyone even knows they're immunocompromised or have certain other pre existing conditions that put you in a higher risk category as some may have not even been diagnosed with them yet.

I would, too. But for better or worse, Trump wouldn't even cross my mind. He's literally got zero to do with it except for opening his big mouth. I don't understand the obsession on either side.

I know it's not worth the risk to find out, but wouldn't it be amazing to learn that those with Lupus are covid resistant or immune?

110%.  Trump is nothing more than a mouthpiece for doctors who have explored HCQ.  

But those who suffer from TDS?  They would likely rather suffer than give in.

It would, although I doubt it. It might be that routinely taking HCQ for a long period of time could help some, or maybe even most, duck this virus. That's kinda the best case scenario to me on this.
