Careful now, when I mentioned this I was laughed at and told I believed in propaganda. Or is it ok now that Trump said the same thing during the pressco today, hard to keep track if I'm honest

I tend to believe the information from the ROK.  If it was just China I would be a bit skeptical.  I have watched the ROK very closely for a number of reasons.  The main one was that I have several close friends there (I have been to Korea many times most recently this past December).  Then, my wife transited through there three weeks ago on her way to Russia (just as their numbers were growing), and I was actually supposed to be there today on my way to Russia, but that trip was canceled for obvious reasons.  I do find it a little optimistic that their numbers have peaked in a little over three weeks, now that may not also be the case here or in Europe, but as our testing ramps up, we may see something similar.

Apologies for not being able to give you an upvote, I ran out trying to help @Boiler stay on top.  :)

Here is a question.  Is the hype more so this time around (as compared to the H1N1 pandemic) because of social media?

IMO I remember there being a lot of 'hype' about H1N1. People were taking it seriously because kids were dying and schools were getting flack for not shutting.  I remember the dread wondering when I'd catch it, and when I caught it, it didn't actually dawn on me that I had it until they tested me. However... I actually remember WNV back in the day.. now that was a ton of people freaking out about every single dead bird they saw, chemicals being sprayed, needing to dump out water, keeping kids inside, and yet it still is a serious disease if you are unlucky to catch it.

This is quite different though, and I certainly understand why. There is no vaccination, cure, or treatment, and it is highly lethal in the old and those with conditions. And we are a country filled with those with conditions. Predictions of how many could likely die is certainly something to take far more seriously. Social media will always drive a lot of things in this world..

That is one thing that is very different this time is all the closings/suspensions, etc.  We were told today to work from home until further notice starting Monday which never happened back in 2009, and schools are being closed nationwide just for caution even though this virus does not seem to impact the youngins as much as those with a few more years under their belt.  The big issue is the unknown with this virus, but I think we can look at the situations in Asia with a bit of optimism.  I know we cannot equate the ROK exactly with the US or the EU (population differences, geography, etc.),  but it does appear if we follow basic hygiene protocols, we should be fine.

I certainly hope this does not impact you as the H1N1 did.

Absolutely not true.  Current predictions are WAY off the charts, IMO.  Based off what we are seeing between Nov and now in Asia, the current estimates are far too high (IMO).

Current mortality rate is about 3.7% and recovery rate is about 48.5%.
