I am a Georgia resident and the voter registration deadline in the coming election for my area is Feb 24th and the election date is on March 24th (Presidential Preference Primary and Special Election). My oath ceremony takes place on Feb 26th. Is it illegal to register to vote before my oath ceremony?

Thanks in advance!

Don't rush too much about voting. Attend the ceremony first, get the naturalization cert, and then you can vote. Do not vote until you official become U.S citizens.

I'm not a lawyer, but you aren't a citizen until you take the oath. That should answer the question!

Register to vote only AFTER you are officially a US citizen.

I can't vote either ways since it is only on March 24th, by then, I would have already taken my oath (Feb 26th).

Registering to vote means you are claiming to be eligible to vote. Being eligible to vote means you would have to be a US citizen.

A (material) false claim to US citizenship is a permanent, unwaivable bar, and cause for removal.

Makes sense, thank you!

the day you take the oath,  there will be a form you can fill out there or take with you and mail in /  you will be able to vote in March primary / you just need to wait till you take the oath and can not register ahead / you will receive a voter registration card in the mail.

As said above,  don't do anything till you take the oath.

Simply put it's Illegal to vote without becoming US citizen. So you are not eligibile for voting nor registering until you have taken your oath. This is the law. Don't even think about it. Yours friendly.

after your oath and voter registration, can you still vote in the presidential elections in November? or is the deadline you mentioned  just for the primaries?

In most states the deadline to be able to vote in the presidential election (November) will be about 1 month before that....early October 2020. So most people who becomes citizens between now and late September should be able to register by early October in order to vote in the 2020 election (Nov).

So here's what they told us during my oath ceremony on 2/18 since we missed the due date to register to vote for the primary:

1) You can go for Early Voting. You will register to vote there (so you don't have to register during the Oath ceremony), or -

2) You can register to vote during the oath ceremony and will be able to vote on Nov. You will unfortunately miss the primaries though.

But either way, you cannot register to vote until you've taken your oath. You are still not considered a US citizen before the oath.
