Does anyone have an experience traveling outside the US on an expired green card? We received the letter that his green card has been extended 18 months while they decide if he is eligible for the removal of conditions. But the green card still has a date of September 2019. We are working on planning a trip to Europe and want to know if they will still view him as a US resident? Please tell me about your experiences.

I moved to Costa Rica: 01/15/2015

My parents visited and he proposed: 06/29/2016

Packet Sent: 07/01/2016

NOA1: 07/05/2016

NOA2: 08/25/2016

NVC Tracking number: 09/12/2016

Medical: 09/28/2016

Interview: 10/11/2016

POE: 10/28/2016

Wedding: 1/6/17 !!!!!

AOS and EAD Packet Sent: 1/18/17

NOA1: 1/23/17

Yes, many on VJ have had that experience. My wife traveled a couple times abroad with an expired card and the extension letter. She didn't have any problems. When we went to Europe, check-in took a little longer both in the US and Italy since the employees doing the check-in were not familiar with the letter, but they quickly confirmed it was OK. 

 

Also, one cannot use the kiosks when returning to the US since the gc has expired, so immigration might take a bit longer when you return, but CBP is very familiar with the card-letter combo. Your husband won't have any problems re-entering the US due to the letter. 

Removing Conditions Timeline

Aug. 10, '17: Mailed in I-751

Aug. 21, '17: NOA1

October 23, '18: NOA2- approval

October 30, 18: 10-year GC received

As long as he has expired GC and the NOA1 showing that his GC was extended. Then he will be fine so dw. Yes, as of right now they do still view him as a resident

Awesome thanks! Last time we traveled, it was two weeks before his green card expired. We ended up having to see someone instead of using a kiosk, but they didn't even ask to see the letter

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

When I was going through ROC I went on a cruise and had no issue with my expired green card and extension letter.

Aug 11, 2018 (Day 6): Recvd notification that Biometrics appointment scheduled       Oct 17, 2019 (Day 17) : Received Passport

Aug 13, 2018 (Day 8): Received biometrics appt letter online                                        Oct 21, 2019 (Day 21) : Received Naturalization Cert. back

Aug 28, 2018 (Day 23): Biometrics Appt

May 06, 2019 (Day 274): In Line For Interview

Jun 11, 2019 (Day 311): Interview Date

July 01, 2019 (Day 327) : Oath Ceremony I AM NOW A US CITIZEN!!!!

No issues coming back with the letter. But I would do research and make sure the country you’re traveling to will accept it. When I was looking at visiting Costa Rica, a quick search said others had tried but were turned away with the letter. Then when I looked on their website, it said must have a “current” greencard. We didn’t want to take any chances so we’ve been visiting countries where my husband doesn’t require a visa.
