How many are filing N-400s before the I-751 has been approved?

Given how long I-751s are taking nowadays, I'm wondering if my wife and I should just go ahead and plan on filing the N-400 right at 3 years, even if the I-751 is still pending. How many people end up doing that?

No issue filing the N-400 while ROC is pending. I don't know how many people are doing it (raw numbers or percentage), but it's a pretty common circumstance still. It may or may not result in a combo interview.

Thanks for your response. Our concern is getting her naturalized as quickly as possible, will filing while ROC is pending speed up the process? Thanks!

Possibly. There is a rule that an N-400 is supposed to be adjudicated within 120 days of the interview, but it's also not something where there's much of an avenue to enforce it if they don't. But there's no harm in trying.

My wife plans to file her N-400 when she becomes eligible in March......she has a pending I-751.  I see no downside.

Looking at your timeline it looks like you will be eligibale to file i751 in May 2021. USCIS processing speeds on its individual locations (Vermont, Potomac, Nebraska, California etc) are extremely volatile. 

 

CSC was on average processing i751s in 18 months when I applied in June 2018. CSC then accelerated the process early this year where I observed some cases getting approved within 12 months THEN later this year in the summer the CSC has again lagging behind and the processing time has been increasing all the way into 15-16months territory. So basically you will have to see how things stand when you get closer to the eligibility time-frame for N400.

We filed the n400 online before the I-751 was approved. It worked perfectly for us...filed n400 March 2018...citizen September 26, 2018. Our I-751 was filed in March 2017, and his joint interview was only a few months after we filed the n400.

Thanks for that tip. Yes, I know that the times can change, but it has definitely been an upward trend over the last few years! The recent changes will likely only make it worse.

what "process" do you want to speed up? USCIS will do whatever they want, whenever they want to do it.

Do you mind expanding on this less-than-helpful response? I mean speed up as in simple math would dictate that filing an N-400 with an I-751 still pending would be faster.

your N-400 will not be looked at until your I-751 is reviewed.

and your I-751 will be reviewed whenever they get to reviewing it.

Yet they can be adjudicated together in the same interview (at least in the past from what I've read here and elsewhere) which would speed up the process dramatically.
