Finland’s government collapsed Friday, just weeks before the country heads to the polls for a general election, after the prime minister failed to win approval for key reforms.

Prime Minister Juha Sipilä has struggled to get social and health-care reforms that he made the cornerstone of his government’s four-year term through parliament. The project aimed to overhaul Finland’s regional government, health and social services to bring down costs and safeguard the system amid an aging population.

Successive Finnish governments have failed to get through similar changes. Statistics Finland estimates that by 2030 around 26% of the population will be aged over 65, from around 21% now.

The reforms intended to remove power from the 295 municipalities that currently oversee health and social care, and place responsibility within a leaner, more efficient system of 18 elected regional authorities. It also wanted to offer patients the choice to choose from a range of public and private providers for their care, modeling the Swedish system.

The government estimated that the changes could save the state around 3 billion euros ($3.4 billion).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

Finland is an odd country in the fact that most of its elite are a minority of Swedish speaking Finns left over from Sweden's more colonial days. Much of the higher ups in government are these Swedish speaking Finns, who are somewhat culturally distinct from the Finnish speaking Finns. Not sure if this ancient rift is contributing to the current situation.

Finland has also been polled as the most racist country in the EU, along with being the happiest country in the world (according to the UN). Ah....statistics.

socialism rocks

What is interesting is when socialism creates a bloated bureaucracy that resists being touched under any circumstances.  The Finnish PM wasn’t trying to get rid of their unsustainable socialist programs, but rather make the bureaucracy running them more efficient to save money and potentially keep them around longer, and he was rebuffed.  I wonder what would happen if the UK ever decided to try and streamline the NHS bureaucracy.

It seems he was trying to tackle the cost of health care, namely the elephant in the room of aging populations costing governments more and more money because they use up most of the health care.

It's honestly kind of an ethical conundrum at its core: yes, we want to save old people but at the time time, what about the younger generations? Is it fair to use the limited resources that a country has on a dying population when birth rates are down and opportunities for young people are suffering? It's just an uncomfortable dilemma most people do not want to think about....especially politicians.

It is interesting the way we continue to spend taxing future generations to pay for something they have no say in, and then seeing those younger generations grow up and actually want more free stuff.

Yep and the US is Number 1!

Wait, are we talking about US health care in general? Bloated? ✓, bureaucracy?✓, resists change under any circumstances?✓, outrageously expensive?✓, or maybe the US military? Thanks for doing another drive by on the US.  You hate our country, we get it.

My memory might be faulty, but many years ago, weren't Finns considered to be the most morose people, or the people who smiled the least, or something?  If that was true, then I wonder whether being crammed up right next to the USSR had anything to do with it.

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

My memory might be faulty, but many years ago, weren't Finns considered to be the most morose people, or the people who smiled the least, or something?  If that was true, then I wonder whether being crammed up right next to the USSR had anything to do with it.

Finns are extremely morose, that's why the article about being the happiest country is so funny.

Wait, are we talking about US health care in general? Bloated? ✓, bureaucracy?✓, resists change under any circumstances?✓, outrageously expensive?✓, or maybe the US military? The Pentagon apparently spent 30 million last year alone on lobster. I am surprised they found any though, because if the right is to be believed, your average food stamp recipient eats lobster at least twice a week, when they are not swapping their food stamps for cash.

So you agree, government bloated bureaucracy is bad.  Not really sure where anyone on the right claimed welfare recipients are eating lobster though, please provide some reference to that generalization.
