US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis to quit

The news of Gen Mattis' departure comes a day after Mr Trump announced all US troops would be withdrawn from Syria.

In his resignation letter, Gen Mattis described his views on "treating allies with respect" and using "all the tools of American power to provide for the common defence".

"Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defence whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down," Gen Mattis wrote.

So?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

In my view it is significant that the Secretary of defense is resigning the day after the Syria tweets with

I do as well and I believe that Saint Mattis wanted us to stay there.

The army holds Mattis in fairly high regard.  He seemed to be a great leader.

But it is not uncommon for a military leader to disagree with their CIC.  Something they are not allowed to do while on active duty, and they are not allowed to speak out publicly against the president even after retirement.

Mattis got a lot of praise on this forum when he was selected. I can't say I saw this coming, but neither am I surprised.

Fairly stinging rebuke, for a man like Mattis to take a swing at POTUS  like. At least trump did not call him a moron in his tweet  about the subject.  There no way to spin this .

For the few things I like about Trump, there are others that really trouble me.  The turnover of people in his admin is one of them.  Nothing speaks as loudly about a boss as the silence left behind as people quit.

What???? Saint Mattis has been talking about us staying there in Syria for a while now and then it gets upended like this. This is afront to our allies the Kurds who are actually controlling that part of Syria and doing a damn good job of it as well.

This one with me as well. As Marine it bothers me that General Kelley and Mattis are leaving.

Okay, I did not understand the "there" to by Syria.

I agree abandoning our mission, both this quickly and without the coordination of our allies, will result in:

1.Undermine our Kurdish allies

2.Iran will strengthen it's hand in the region

3.Assad will stay in, forever

4.Russia gets everything they want in the region, scott free

5.Undercut the Syrians in the region who are just getting on their feet

6.Allow ISIS a chance to get back in the game

Which will ALL happen.  Today, tomorrow, next, year, or next decade.... as soon as we withdraw.  Those people do NOT want peace and harmony enough to actually own it.  And us pretend forcing it on them is about as effective as a screen door on a submarine.

Congrats to the Trump administration for announcing withdrawal from Syria. About time. America should never gone there in the first place. The Syrians have suffered enough.
