Hillary Clinton: Europe must curb immigration to stop rightwing populists

Clinton was one of three heavyweights of the centre-left interviewed by the Guardian to better understand why their brand of politics appears to be failing. All three have seen their countries upended by political events that to some degree can be explained by the success of rightwing populism.

The other two interviewees, Tony Blair and Matteo Renzi, agreed that the migration issue had posed significant problems for centrist politics.

“You’ve got to deal with the legitimate grievances and answer them, which is why today in Europe you cannot possibly stand for election unless you’ve got a strong position on immigration because people are worried about it,” Blair said. “You’ve got to answer those problems. If you don’t answer them then … you leave a large space into which the populists can march.”

Clinton urged forces opposed to rightwing populism in Europe and the US not to neglect the concerns about race and identity issues that she says were behind her losing key votes in 2016. She accused Trump of exploiting the issue in the election contest – and in office.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Center right, neoliberal would probably best define her. Why do you think the Republicans hated the Clintons so much? They stole the Republicans clothes as it were. Ergo the drift to the far right, which has now brought us Trump.

I certainly would agree that neo libs is an excellent description of most Dems,  not really a Hillary issue.

I can see that with Bill, not Hillary.  Trump is more centrist in his policies than Hillary, but the hatred of the man is so extreme, no one on the left sees that.

Btw, I believe Hillary is planning on going further Left if she decides to run again.

More importantly, we haven't had Hillary come up in a topic for almost 24 hours, so this one was very much needed.

Looking at thousands of years of history, I think it's safe to say excessive immigration or migration of any kind has generally caused anti immigrant reaction in existing populations. It's just human nature. The exception obviously being when something like war or disease has led to population depletion, in which case immigration was tolerated or even welcomed.

Sorry, check the quiz in the other thread. I'm so middle of the road, I have to watch out for NB swerving back and forth across the center line.

If you see me on the left, it's 'cause you're standing to the right

You have to be careful, he does’t identify as NB anymore.  Self identification is so important now days.

By the time I remember the new name, it will likely be back to NB again.

Whatever the name, it will be creatively spelled.
