Global Entry with Conditional Green Card

Had a strange experience with my wife's Global Entry interview.

My wife arrived in the US on CR-1 in December and we recently received her conditional green card. It expires in 2 years from her date of entry. Yesterday, we went to EWR for her Global Entry interview. The officer said that since she is a conditional permanent resident, she can't get Global Entry. The application will stay open and she can come back for an interview when she gets the non-conditional green card (in about 2 years from now...). I looked for hours to try to find something regarding this but can't come up with anything - all the posts I see say there's no problem getting GE with a conditional green card.

Has anyone else had this same issue? Is this something new?

she only has a tempory green card not a permanent card

this site explains it

https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/global-entry

At airports, program members proceed to Global Entry kiosks, present their machine-readable passport or U.S. permanent resident card,

That actually makes sense. The green card she has is only for 2 years. The global entry is for 5 years. What if in 2 years she gets denied a Residency (not likely to happen and hoping that it doesn’t happen to her)? But the point is she would have a global entry on an expired residency.

Simply have her reapply after her removal of conditions.

I imagine its because the GE card is valid for 5 years, and as the GC is only valid for 2, they will not issue it.. if it was based on citizenship.. ie her national Passport.. that would be ok as it is technically ongoing. Just my thoughts...

Yeah - I thought this might be the case - the 2 years / 5 years discrepancy wouldn't be compatible. Just found it odd that it is not mentioned anywhere on the CBP site. She has a machine readable Green Card and all that, just valid for only 2 years.

Thanks (and hope this helps someone on Google with the same question someday :))

One of the perks of Global Entry is TSA PreCheck. Just so you know, if you buy tickets using your Known Traveler Number with your wife traveling with you, she may get TSA PreCheck on her tickets also. Note: this is only for TSA PreCheck and not Global Entry. This happened multiple times with me and my wife. She loves not having to go through the normal security screenings.

Again, this may or may not happen to you but my wife and I have been successful with TSA PreCheck.

Yes! I have GE/Precheck, and this happens 100% of the time my wife and I are on the same reservation. It's very helpful.

I got global entry no problem immediately after getting my 2 year conditional GC in 2016. I have used it a lot those last two years - no issues. I am currently unable to use it as I am stuck in the ROC purgatory and extension letters won't work, but as soon as I get my 10y GC I will update and start using it again.

So it is not true that conditional GC holders cannot get GE, unless something changed very recently.

My GE interview was at EWR as well, and I do 90% of my international travel through that airport.

My wife also got global entry and TSA precheck shortly after getting her conditional green card. There was no issue with the application or the interview, but the interviewing officer did mention that GE wouldn't work during ROC.

She received her GC September 2017 and GE in December 2017.

My experience exactly, and it started working again as soon as I got my 10-year card. A conditional green card is still a permanent resident card, so that makes no sense.

So a long time lurker of the board! Finally decided to chime in on this thread. You can get global Entry if you have a valid Green Card(machine readable) at the time of interview. They need it to scan into the system.

However, if you have a 751 extension or a 551 stamp in your passport, you would not be able to use the kiosk(again needs machine readable valid GC). You can however go to the line (for the folks who get a X from the kiosk) and agent will manually process you. Speaking from personal experience.

Thanks for the insight!

So it sounds like from the several anecdotes that this particular officer was possibly misinformed? I wonder if it's worth going to another interview to try again. I'll make an appointment- guess it can't hurt.

most likely yes. I am employed by a defense contractor and they have some of the stringent checks on who they can hire. Even they treat conditional and permanent GC the same. I don't know what was this officer saying. All I can think of is that your records may not have been updated in all of the systems. For ex, if you enter USA on work visa for the very first time, you have to apply for SSN but you can not do this until your arrival record has been updated in USCIS system.

These insights are very good. I am on ROC, have 751 extension letter and applied for Global Entry. It has been 30 days and i havent gotten any news. I think if ur on ROC, then I assume Im most likely not getting a conditional approval since the date on my GC machine readable is expired. I hope I get lucky on getting a conditional approval and hopefully pass then interview. My spouse applied later than me then in 5 days he is conditionally approved — of course coz he is US citizen. Hope some can chime in this thread who are ROC when they applied for GE, and got approved.

I don’t know if this thread is still active, but want to give an update about ROC GC and Global entry. I have an approved global entry. Though my experience the officers were not first familiar what to do and almost declined me. However i did try to explain to them that it ia possible. Luckily, one high ranking officer heared themc When their manager/lead officer explained to them that it can be processed, they did and completed my interview and approved it. It was their first time to process and expired GC so you just be very friendly and patient to explain it. All went well.
