Can I apply for a SSN once I have my I94?

Hi Guys,

 

I entered the US on feb 1st 2018 with my K1 visa.

The CBP officer just gave me my passport back with a stamp mentioning the 3 months that i have to marry my fiancee.

 

Now this is the part that gets me confused-

I went to this website- https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov  and printed my latest I-94, does that mean that I'm in the "system" ( aka SAVE-ASVI system)? or should I wait for a 1-2 weeks?

 

Another question - what documents do I need to bring with me to get my SSN?

Yes, you can immediately apply for and receive a SSN on the basis of being a K-1 without needing to have gotten married yet.

 

Bring the following to your local SSA office:

  • Your valid foreign passport containing the K-1 visa
  • A print-out of your I-94
  • A completed SS-5 (application for a social security number)
  • An original certified copy of your birth certificate (not everyone is asked for this, although I was)

Yes you can go get a ssn now and it is preferable that you do that now and not later. 

 

It does that mean you are in the system so don't worry. Previously they gave out the I94 form physically now it's all electronic.

Yes... But they'll expire when his I-94 does, and he won't be able to extend them until he has at least an EAD.

So it is pretty essential to get both your SSN and the full driving test procedures fairly quickly then?
