I did it last summer. Actually with an  expired 18 months letter, I-551stamp on my passport and no Green Card, as mine was issued with a mistake and had to send it back when I applied for my I-751.

I was out of the Country for 2 months, enter through Dallas.

They just kept me in the little room for about 15min while they checked the letter and stamps were legit. Just have that in mind if you're booking a connecting flight. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time.

I wont be going for a stamp since the passport, expired GC and I-797 should be good for me.

I traveled with the 12 month extension letter and expired green card last December. No issues whatsoever. Had to explain a little to the airline guys at the counter, but they were fine with it after checking with their boss. Could not use the automated card readers on arrival in the US, had to stand in the Visitors line. Was not taken to secondary. Just the usual couple questions. Done in a minute. So be prepared but don't worry too much 😀

I checked my case status online and it still says "On February 26, 2018, we received your Form I-751, Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence, Receipt Number WAC17320XXXXX, at your local office."

Am I the only one that has this status? I've seen your posts with updates in April.

nope...but I've noticed that case with 2 numbers more then mine got approved today.
