Vulnerable Republicans flee from Trump

House Republicans facing tough reelection bids are running for cover from Donald Trump — an early sign that they believe the president’s deepening scandals could cost them their seats and even put the House in play.

More than 10 centrist Republicans over the past 48 hours have criticized Trump for reportedly sharing classified information with Russian officials or allegedly trying to quash an FBI investigation. Many joined Democrats in calling for a special prosecutor to take the reins of the Justice Department investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow. (The DOJ named a special counsel on Wednesday.) Others want a select congressional committee to be appointed.

One swing-district lawmaker, Rep. Carlos Curbelo of Florida, raised the possibility of impeaching Trump if it turns out to be true that he leaned on FBI Director James Comey to drop an investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn. But in case it wasn’t clear how Curbelo felt about the matter, his office called reporters to make sure they emphasized Curbelo was the first Republican lawmaker to utter the “I-word.”

“Obstruction of justice is an impeachable offense, so that is an allegation that we have to take very seriously,” Curbelo told a Miami CBS affiliate. “That does not mean it happened, but if this story is accurate, it may have happened. Whatever the case is, we need to get the facts.”

The break from Trump among centrist Republicans is especially notable because some of them had stuck by the president through the brutal fight over Obamacare repeal legislation two weeks ago, backing an unpopular bill despite great political risk at home.

Alan Richtman just on tv... Article from yesterday? ( jet lag)

Way back in September, when most pundits were gleefully speculating about whether the Republican Party would everrecover from the Electoral College shellacking in store for then-candidate Donald Trump, one man had a very different guess about how things would shake out. Allan Lichtman, a history professor at American University in Washington, D.C., declaredTrump to be the favorite, relying on an election prediction methodology he had developed some three decades earlier and used to correctly predict every presidential election since. Lichtman was, of course, extremely correct—an accomplishment that earned him a personal note from the president-elect just a few days after the election. "Professor—congrats," wrote Trump in a letter to Lichtman. "Good call."

Around that same time, though, the vindicated prognosticator already had another fearless forecast ready to go, one that the president-elect would presumably not appreciate as much: Trump, Professor Lichtman asserted with confidence, will become only the third President of the United States to be impeached. He makes his case in a new book, The Case for Impeachment, and we spoke to him last week about how the country got to this point, and why he feels just as confident about this prediction as he was with the last one.

trump's trip will be reminiscent of Nixon going to Middle East in 1974, and Bill Clinton to Europe in 1998...

I'd say rather the opposite. I'd say the republican base should, no, must support your representatives and demand that they do the right thing.

Trump is a sinking ship, and the worst thing we can hope for is that the republicans in congress who really care about our country should let him run unchecked. This is the time to demand that your representative do his or her job and ensure that Trump doesn't damage our economy and reputation, and puts us at odds with our allies.

This is not the time to run. This is the time to storm the bridge and demand Capt. Smith to veer the ship away from the iceberg.

Will they discuss chocolate cakes or how great the wall will be once Mexico pays for it?

You didn't hear? Construction on the wall has already begun.

None of these republicans supported Trump to begin with. They are all back stabbers. Good riddance.

Spoken like a Republican with nothing to lose! Can't say I admire your inability to perceive Trump is running out of room to wiggle, but your determination to stand by your Dear Leader is kind of amazing.

So true. They did not support him at all even when he became the nominee. They did not pretend to support him until after the election.
