The question that should be asked is why is that word on the list to start with? Dumb. Just dumb.

That's the second question. The first question is why do you purposely use a word your professor gave as an example of a word that should not be used. I didn't agree with everything my English professor said either, but I never presumed I knew better than him, and I damn well knew who was grading the class. There is a time and a place to debate an instructor.  Purposely testing them on a graded assignment is not one of those places.

If gender neutral terminology is part of the writing requirement for the class you have two choices. Learn how to use it or take a different class. You don't have to agree with it. Learning that you can't have everything your own way is a good lesson for the rest of your life.

You're not being graded for your posts Charles, fortunately.  We do have a TOS here and posters agree to follow it when posting even though much of it is currently bordering on the inane. That's how life works. We don't have to like or agree with everything.

To follow on a theme from another topic, every one of us is free to get an english degree, become a professor, and teach to the standards that we want. All of that is assuming the course content is not coming from higher up in the first place, which they often are. The fact is gender neutrality is not just one professors pet peeve. It's not going to be an issue for today's kids when they grow up. Only for their grandpa's.

I find it is racist to call it an English Degree when it is clearly a Murican Degree.

And why English? Damn cisgender white males made up these English degrees. Remove these racist degrees now before I organize a group of whiny leftists to protest Trump this injustice!

Gender neutrality, when referring to a specific sex  is about as stupid as calling a cat a dog

but using gender neutral terms was part of the assignment. and from the teacher's explanation it wasn't part of the assignment because of forcing social justice or whatever, but to teach how to address in gender neutral terms which makes sense as this is a useful skill in the real world.

what if your boss tells you to write up a press release and its on a sort of sensitive topic and you need to get the information out there without offending potential customers so your boss would like the release in gender neutral terms? would it make sense to throw a non gender neutral term into the press release youre drafting because you can't stand social justice warriors?

My life, my day is full of these micro aggressions.

Renounce your whiteness and join the Tolerance Klan Club. Purify yourself of your inherent racist biases by being racist to whites tolerant of everyone. Denounce your privilege by protesting Trump breaking into Bank of America marching, holding signs, and singing kumbaya! (<- non-aggressively)

Who was referring to a specific sex? The whole point of the article (and discussion) is about using gender neutrality when not referring to a specific sex.

  (SOUND OF PAPER BEING RUFFLED)

- Professor Jones

- Yes, Mr. Smith.

- Would you care to explain your comment on exercise 3?

- Yes. It states: You have two dollars, and you receive a two more dollars. How many dollars do you end up with. The correct answer is four dollars.

- But professor I said I ended up with 3 cats and 1 dog.

- And that is why you earned no points for that exercise.

- How come? I don't agree with the result. Why can't my answer be right?

- Have you read the syllabus Mr. Smith.

- Of course, I have.

- The syllabus states how to act in cases like these. It even tells you that you should not convert dollars into dogs and cats.

- But...

- The purpose of the exercise is to test you on your ability to do the exercises as required and instructed.

- But I don't want to follow the syllabus. It's your fault I will graduate with a low GPA

- How's that so?

- Because I say so, and many people on the internet agree with me. (WHINING)

- Maybe they haven't been to college, Mr. Smith (SHAKING HEAD).

The Best and Worst Comments Allegedly Received, allegedly taken from M.I.T.'s Course-Evaluation Guide, Fall 1991:
---
"Text is useless.  I use it to kill roaches in my room."

"He teaches like Speedy Gonzalez on a caffeine high."

"In class, the syllabus is more important than you are."

"Help!  I've fallen asleep and I can't wake up!"

"Text makes a satisfying 'thud' when dropped on the floor."

"The class is worthwhile because I need it for the degree."

"His blackboard technique puts Rembrandt to shame."

"Textbook is confusing... someone with a knowledge of English should proofread it."

"Have you ever fallen asleep in class and awakened in another?  That's the way I felt all term."

"This class was a religious experience for me... I had to take it all on faith."

"The recitation instructor would make a good parking-lot attendant.  Tries to tell you where to go, but you can never understand him."

"Recitation was great.  It was so confusing that I forgot who I was, where I was, and what I was doing... it's a great stress-reliever."

"I would sit in class and stare out the window at the squirrels.  They've got a cool nest in the tree."

"The absolute value of the T.A. was less than epsilon."

"T.A. steadily improved throughout the course... I think he started drinking and it really loosened him up."

"Information was presented like a ruptured fire-hose, spraying in all directions -- no way to stop it."

"I never bought the text.  My $60 was better spent on the Led Zeppelin tapes that I used while doing the problem sets."

"What's the quality of the text?  'Text is printed on high-quality paper.'"

"The course was very thorough.  What wasn't covered in class was covered on the final exam."

"Problems sets are a decoy to lure you away from potential Exam material."

"He is one of the best teachers I have had... he is well-organized, presents good lectures, and creates interest in the subject.  I hope my comments don't hurt his chances of getting tenure."
