La La Land!

No, no, I mean, Moonlight!

With all the craziness going around I needed a break and did watch the Oscars. Oh, boy, drama drama drama.

I have to say, I loved how ethnically diverse this year was. Gael talking against the wall, Dev being all sexy.

Poor Warren Beatty. He noticed the card was wrong, and technically he showed it to his partner and it was Faye that announced the movie. He was suspicious, but it's hard to question things in front of a live audience, and broadcasting to millions.

I wish Jimmy Kimmel would've laid off on the trump jokes.  I dislike giving that man anymore attention than he already gets.  However, I did think the Iranian man whose film won best foreign film had a great platform to speak on it.  The letter that was read in his place of acceptance speech was very well written and recited.

I think at this point Trump is no longer competing for anything, so giving him attention doesn't really help him. Before the election I would have agreed, that people shouldn't keep bringing him up. Now that he has won, I don't have a problem with it and I don't think it really helps Trump. Doesn't really hurt him since the audience likely already filled with people who don't support him. So it just played the people that were there.

Comedians are doing really well with this material right now.

Nothing wrong there. Faye was simply presenting the audience with alternative facts. LOL

Perhaps Iran could host next year.

I'm not a supporter of the ban and I'll admit I didn't watch it, but from what I saw on it on FB it seems delirious to me.

La La Land, even if you love it, undeniably rests on the appropriation of black culture. Its very “escapism” depends on a quest for authenticity for those who can afford to choose their own soundtrack. Moonlight, symphonic, stylised, complex draws on those marginalised by the film industry. Moonlight is about emotional deprivation but it overflows with humanity. Obviously these are two very different movies but they are freighted with what they do and don’t say about race.

What some people saw in this mistake was again a cultural bias against black art, unconscious though it may be

This is why this mix-up mattered more than a bit of onstage awkwardness. What some people saw in this mistake was again a cultural bias against black art, unconscious though it may be. Some saw a conspiracy. Some saw the biggest award of the night undermined. This is hardly a paranoid reading when we keep seeing award ceremonies where black artists lose – Adele winning best album over Beyoncé at the Grammys, or the debacle of the Brits which has grime artists perform as though domesticated pets but will not reward them.

I disagree. I think that is overstepping a claim of "unconscious racial bias".

I'm not denying the Academy Awards is horribly biased, and it is much harder for someone in a minority group to win (for multiple reasons - different roles during casting and during the voting process).

However, I think this was quite clearly a managerial mistake behind the scenes. It's not like the presenters "misspoke" what was on their card. The card said La La Land. Warren Beatty noticed that it also said Emma Stone, he showed it to Faye Dunaway and she didn't notice and just said "La La Land".

The wrong card was handed out, and then it was improperly announced. I don't see any racial bias in that. It's not like the movie on the card wasn't nominated for best picture. It was another contender, it was a popular movie, so seeing it on the card wouldn't be that surprising. It was clear Faye Dunaway took a split second look, saw the name, and said it outloud thinking that Warren was just "joking" by not saying it out loud.

I think so too, but with so much racism coming out of this administration, it's not surprising a foreign paper chose to explore the race angle.
