Violence erupts after officer-involved shooting

standoff between police and an angry crowd turned violent Saturday night in the hours after a Milwaukee police officer shot and killed an armed suspect during a foot chase on the city's north side.

After an hours-long confrontation with officers, police reported at 10:15 p.m. that a gas station at Sherman Blvd. and Burleigh St. was set on fire. Police said firefighters could not get close to the blaze because of gunshots.

Earlier in the evening, more than 100 people gathered near the scene at N. 44th St. and W. Auer Ave. and at times pushed against a line of 20 to 30 officers, some of whom were in riot gear.

City police officials said two officers stopped two suspects in a car about 3:30 p.m. The suspects then took off on foot. During the pursuit, a six-year veteran of the department shot and killed a 23-year-old Milwaukee resident, who was carrying a semiautomatic handgun, police said.

The climate in the country now reminds me of the situation in major cities after MLK was assassinated and also the situation in LA after Rodney King. Remarkable racial tension punctuated by racial violence, unrealistic expectations and intolerance on both sides.

Unless these tensions can be reduced through some level of mutual cooperation we are doomed.something needs to be done sooner rather than later or irreparable harm will be done. I cry for our future

Sheriff Clarke will have none of this I can guarantee you that. It won't be like Baltimore. My wife's step brother is actually a deputy and they are told "you do what you need to do, I'll take care of the rest".

BTW, this is not the first time in recent weeks we see outrage over some dude being shot for running away from the cops, armed or not. Since when are they not allowed to shoot at a suspected criminal who's running away without waiting for them to shoot first? Ridiculous.

Milwaukee itself is about 40% black and another 17% hispanics, two demographics that more often than not vote democrat, so that explains part of it. There are more black people in the city at 40% than non hispanic white people(37%).
