SSA wont give a K1 visa holder a SSN

So, Im pretty pissed right now... I need to add my wife (got here 3 weeks ago on K1 visa) to my health insurance and that require a SSN. I went to the SSA office and the first day i went, they told me I needed the i-94... okay no problem.. went back home and printed one out... took my wife back to the SSA office and a different person told us she needs a work permit to get a SSN... What now?? what do i do now? How do i get her health insurance with a SSN? I will be applying to the AOS this week but how long does the work permit take??

She arived on march 19th and the i-94 doesnt expire till Mid June...

Any advice/help?

go to the step by step ssn and print out the form and take to your SSN office, some staff dont know that a K1 person can get a SSN., you can also take the passport that has the K1 visa stamp inside of it .

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Fill out the form for applying SSN and bring it to the office.. talk to another person who knows about the process.. that's what we did.. they brought us inside and just asked for my husbands I-94 and passport.. and of course, the completed SSN form.. that's it.. when his SSN arrived, it has a note on the card saying "valid for work only with DHS authorization" (since he doesn't have his EAD at that time)

After applying for AOS in her married name, return to the SSA later with her EAD/AP or green card in married name and have the SSN updated to her married name.

We will go again today and i hope they give it to her... I want to put her on my health benefits and SSA employees not knowing how to do their job isnt really helping me here.... Lets hope it works today.

Follow this instruction from KDC...she is fully entitled to receiving the SS card.

That said, if you got married, and tried to file her SS card with married name,

then "YES", they will required her to bring EAD or Green card.

Whether you are married or not, at this point, be sure to apply for SS card

in her last name and then change it after she gets EAD card.

So...the question is did she attempt to file for SS card using the married name?

We have the same last names. So there is no name change. Yet they still said not without EAD

As others have said, go to another SSA office. I'm sure one closer to San Francisco has staff more familiar with K-1 visas. Did you print this out and bring it last time?

They issued it! The guy that said no to us was wrong. I did complain about it to the management.

So we went back and were lucky to get the same lady who helped us the very first time, who said to bgin the i94 and she will take care of it. So now just gotta wait for the mail.

Great news! Happy to hear. Was she issued for a non-employment SS# ? I am assuming that condition will be taken off after AOS
