Going to US on one-way ticket

Hi there!

I am a French citizen living on London and I am planning on applying for the Working Holiday Visa to Canada. The thing is, before going to Canada I am planning on staying in the US for around 2 months to visit a friend. Basically, my question is, would it be ok for me to buy a one-way ticket from London - USA (entering the US on the visa waiver program) and then a ticket for USA-Montreal to depart two months after I arrive in the states? I would plan on staying in Canada for the two years to work but I won't have a job there until I arrive and start looking for one, thus looking like I have even less intent on leaving the States even though I actually do want to leave! I also won't have a return ticket to London since airlines don't sell tickets two years in advance! Do you think US immigration will give me a hard time over this?

Thanks for the help!

Entering on the VWP requires you to have a return ticket.

If you are flying from London, a return ticket will be cheaper than a one way! Just cancel the return part once you arrive here.

Technically this is against most airlines' policies, although it is rarely if ever enforced.

The other issue with your plan is that leaving the US for Canada after entering on the Visa Waiver Program does not turn off the 90 day clock. You would be considered in the US for VWP purposes from the time you enter the US until the time you leave Canada....a significant overstay of the VWP!

VWP you need a return or onward ticket.

I have read the words and understand where you are coming from. Do not recollect seeing somebody in this situation.

This does not make any sense to me. OP will have the Canadian visa in his/her passport on arrival to the US and it will be stamped upon entry to Canada, showing that they have not been in the US all that time.

Simple provide the air ,bus , or train ticket ,the way you will be leaving US for Canada if you only have one way ticket to US.

I think you can go online purchase the ticket 2 months in advance and later you just go cancel or change the schedule.

This would be true if Canada was a part of the United States... When he go to Canada he has left the states and the clock is off.

As long as you can show a ticket which demonstrates that you are leaving the US within the 90 days I don't think this will be an issue.

Just find out before you buy your ticket from Homeland..things work differently at in different countries.

If you leave the US when you enter, you might not be readmitted on the same visa if the rules doesnt allow multiple entry. I am not very sure but just make sure you read the rules and speak to someone at uscis about it before you leave London.
