My employer is saying that in order to add my fiancee to my insurance after we marry, we need the marriage certificate AND her SSN card. She can't get an SSN card without work authorization. She can't get work authorization at least for a few months after we apply for it. Does this sound right? Does anyone else have issues getting an SSN without having authority to work in the US?

As soon as she arrives or you marry she can go to the SS office and apply for her card!!!!

Correct. She can get a SSN now. No problem. It may say she is not allowed to work, until she gets her EAD, ( then you get an updated card) but it will be her permanent SS number.

We ran into this as well. My daughter does NOT have a social security number and she was added to my husbands insurance. I received a printout from the SSN office explaining that banks and insurance people do NOT need a SSN for what they do. She does qualify for one, but they do not really need her number.

That is not a true statement. With a K-1 she is authorized to apply for a SSN. She doesn't need work authorization to get her SSN.

One she arrives in the US she can apply for her SSN after 10 days (she needs to wait so she's in the system). She needs to apply before she's been here for 76 days. She should apply BEFORE you get married because some people have had issues once they're married. The card will say "valid with DHS authorization" (meaning she can't work without an EAD or GC) but she WILL be able to be on your insurance.

Some people also reported just putting 0's where it asked for the number and it working that way :D

My wife did not have her SSN or work authorization when I added her to my insurance and to my bank accounts.

Good luck!

You can get a SSN after about two to three weeks of POE (it will be marked that no work unless DHS Authorization) but it will be a SSN and it will be hers for life.

We were late getting a SSN. When I talked to the HR department in my company, they said it was not a big deal and had me put in a fake number to get her on my insurance. A week later, we got our new insurance card in the mail and they even back dated the insurance to our wedding date. I would just call your insurance company and figure it out with them.

Thanks everyone. But I'm reading that social security won't issue a card or number to people unless they provide evidence of their work authorization with the application, which as a K-1 visa holder, we will not have.

This is not true. I know many people from Visajourney talk about getting their SSN almost as soon as they arrive. On a K1. Go to the office. She will be able to get her number

Where are you reading that? It is not the case. Those that enter with a K-1 are eligible for an SSN. Go to the SS office 10-14 days after she arrives and apply for one. She is a legal alien allowed to work. She of course cannot work without her EAD or green card first, but she CAN get an SSN. Here is the guide for it on VJ: http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

Also, print out this page and show them section G : https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211420

Both the page listed in the guide and the one I just linked to show that a K-1 is eligible. People that come on a K-1 get them after arriving all the time.

I had to make the guy at the SS office check because he was a little unsure, but he issued me an SSN no problem.

Even asked where I got one of the printouts from that I had - it must've been an internal SS document.

(I do love calling them The SS).

David.
