Perhaps if all of Germany has paid the price by losing half its land for crimes against humanity and the Jewish people in particular, then the world, especially the Middle East, may be quite different.

How different would the world be without Israel as a thorn in the center of the Muslim world? Would there be such a thing a Middle East crisis? Would there ever have been one? Would Iran have a reason to go crazy over anything? Would the people of Palestine have experienced deliberate genocide performed by the Israeli Jews? Would there be a need for Hamas? Would there have been flotilla executions? Bombs raining down on innocent civilians, children included?

Try to answer those questions.

As for my personal opinion, yes, I believe the founding of Israel in 1948 was ill conceived and a move in the wrong direction, and I'm not alone. That doesn't mean that I don't like Jewish people in general. Not in the slightest. I judge people by their actions, not their ethnicity or religious affiliation. I resent Israel as a state because of the pain it has caused so many people, because of the damage it has done to world peace, and because of the inconceivable waste of U.S. taxpayers' money to feed its thirst for power for the Jewish people on so many levels.

But I get along with people of all backgrounds just fine. Many of those have never slapped their religion into my face, the same way I haven't done that to them. I'm sure I have atheists, Christians, Jews, Muslims, and certainly Buddhists in my circle of friends. As so often, we don't really discuss politics and religion, as that can really spoil the nicest get-together. Put a liberal and a conservative in one room and talk politics and you're asking for trouble. Put a Priest and a Rabbi and an Imam in one room and discuss religion and you'll have the same. Knowing that, I usually keep my opinions regarding politics and religion to myself.

I'm black. For many people that means I feel that anyone who talks about 'black issues' without full sensitivity to black people, is racist. Well, I must not be black enough... There is a guy at my job that believes that the confederate flag means nothing more than 'Southern Pride.' Sure, the flag does not means the enforcement of slavery in his eyes but to African Americans and many northerners it kinda sorta means something a little different....

I don't think the guy is a racist although I wish he'd reconsider. He believes what he believes. Yes, it does rub me the wrong way...I have a visceral reaction to it. I just do.. But... racist? I cannot in good conscious say that he would actually like to revert back to the days of forced servitude, or more simply that he hates or has no respect for me because I'm black. If I froze his comments on the flag in time and that was the only experience I had of him, I would have a narrow perception of who he was. The truth us, he has truly been an exceptional colleague, helping when he can, treating me with genuine common respect and decency.

The flag thing was hurtful at the beginning but I, and we all should, be able to juggle more that one idea about another human being at one time.

I wonder about Magical. A great many of his postings leave me with a warm, fuzzy feeling and his picture makes me smile. His wife and him seem so perfect for each other. He seems like such a pleasant person and I wonder if that is ingrained in his persona.

As much as Bob hates to admit it: his lack of politeness is a typical German trait. If someone in the US tells you to "stop by next time you are in town" it's a way of saying "don't bother showing up again." If the cashier at the supermarket asks you how you are doing, she doesn't really give a rodent's behind. In the USA you are asked "how can I help you?" which in German is translated as "what [the hell] do you want?"

If a German invites you into his home, it has nothing to do with politeness, it's real. Germans come often over as extreme in-polite, but that's just their way of being honest and leaving the B.S. out of it. Bob just can't shed his off completely, it must be in his genes.

I feel the same way, being a Russian.

The only thing I don't quite agree with is that I don't think it's a lack of politeness... Politeness is expressed in different ways in other countries compared to the US. And if a cashier in Russia wishes me "to have a good day", that won't be considered polite at all, it will be considered fake. Or sarcastic. Well, at least it will definitely mean that something is wrong with the cashier's attitude.

YES! I wonder about JimVaPhuong... Have no idea where from the US he's from so can't even venture a guess. AS for Bob, he probably sounds like he's from a James Bond Movie!

Jim is from California, if I am not wrong, and he's one of my favourite VJers . He is VERY helpful and kind! Totally recommended.
