Neither had ever even met someone who wasn't Japanese before, and I swooped in and done stoled their daughter.

They're wicked nice to me, though.

And the old man is an absolute booze hound, so we hit it right off.

Heh.

My in-laws do not speak English either for all useful intents and purposes. They were not fond of me before my German became decent enough to communicate well and often with them. Then I guess we both realized that we weren't so bad after we spoke more. The relationship is much, much improved.

To be completely honest, I think I would really be missing out on a lot if we couldn't speak to each other. Then again, I have a strained relationship with my mother and haven't spoken to my father in nearly 10 years. Nice to have some kind of sane and responsible parents again, even if they are suffixed with 'in-law'. ;)

I probably just lucked out in that department. YMMV. :innocent:

Love MIL - she is great & one of my best friend here. FIL is okay.

For husband, he loves my mom & dad. They love him too and that helps them with coping with the fact that I live so far away.
