We got married on Oct 9, 2014.

Her 2 year GC expires on Aug 27, 2017.

Wouldn't it have been better if USCIS issued 3 year GC, so that you can apply

for USC directly afterwards.

It is so inefficient to issue 2 year GC, which forces us to apply for 10 year GC,

and only a year after, we have to apply for USC again.

There is a lot of cost and effort associated from both our side and USCIS side.

1st, they give a 2 years GC so after it expires the couple have to get back to USCIS so they can make sure they are still married and the marriage was not fake,even if a divorce happened they want to know the status of the immigrant.

2nd, you dont 'have to' apply for the citizenship. It's optional.

the problem was that there used to be so many fake marriages for a GC, that they had to try to deter that, at least a little bit, there are still marriages for money and a GC, but less than before

in the 90's and earlier a person would automatically get a 10 GC and could divorce the petitioner spouse the next day, so by adding an extra step, at 2 years, you still have to prove that it is a legal marriage to get the 10 year GC

my stepdad automatically got a 10 year GC, and they have been married for over 20 years, my USC mom filed for him in the '90s

Good point on the fake green cards, aleful. It truly used to be rampant back then. People would openly offer their "services" in the neighborhoods. You don't hear about it nearly as much anymore.

This is where you are wrong. Nobody is forced to apply for citizenship.

The law could perhaps be tweaked.. prove a bonafide marriage for 3 years (3-yr conditional GC).

Following which, either ROC for a full 10-yr GC, OR option to apply for USC.

One way to deter fake marriages.. and.. one less hassle.

My Mom's family has been living in the usa since the mid 70s and have zero plans to naturalize. Some even have USC children

So does this lady... When she moved here there wasn't any immigration junk to filter through, but one day she was told she needed to register and get a green card and has had one ever since. I think she's in her 60s. Lovely lady. Being around her reminds me of being with family in Canada. (She's British though.)
