Not sure if this is the proper place to ask this but my wife received her 10 year green card in the mail today and we are confused as to if she must carry it on her person or should it be locked up in a safe deposit box or personal safe for safety of not losing it? Thanks in advance for the replies. Frank

09/27/2008- Received I-864 Package :

09/29/2008- Mailed I-864 Package to NVC :

10/02/2008- I-864 packet delivered to Portsmouth NH 11AM per USPS tracking

10/03/2008- I-864 package entered into NVC system

10/13/2008- I-864 confirmed approved by phone with NVC

10/20/2008- In Philippines helping assembly DS-230 Documents to send

10/22/2008- Sent DS-230 package by FedEx to NVC :

10/23/2008- DS-230 Package rec'd by R. Pearse 9:27am at NVC

10/24/2008- Now just waiting for NVC to approve DS-230

10/29/2008- NVC approved DS-230, Called today 11/1/2008 from Phils to ask status and was told the good news!!!

11/06/2008- Interview date set 12/12/2008, Received email reply confirming date but still need letter!

11/20/2008- Letter received in Philippines

11/25/2008- Medical at St Lukes everything ok!!!!!!

12/12/2008- Interview complete but need Marriage Index from NSO. Applied for 12/15/2008

01/06/2009- Got Marriage Index at NSO & took it to USEM, was told they will call when Visa can be picked up

01/16/2009- Visa delivered by Delbros....fantastic!!!!

I would venture to say a lot of people, states have driver services facility for 'duplicate license' just for that very reason.!

Unless I am going to travel abroad my Green Card is in the sate box to stay, not even USCIS itself will change that. If it was free of charge to replace then I would carry it with me at all times.

The rule is that it is supposed to be carried, i have always carried my 2 year one, i guess that a photocopy may be a good alternative and lock up the card.

The documentation that comes with it states the responsibilities, well it did when I got mine.

Yes, it's meant to be carried, as proof of your immigration status.

I never carried mine (far too valuable to loose and a PITA to replace). Now it's not a problem because I don't need it anymore :thumbs:

I'd definitely carry it if you're anything other than caucasian and live in some state like AZ.

i never carring my green card and i live close to san clemente revision and i past 4 to 8 times everyday because my husband is a marine and i drove him to work everyday... one time they stopped me and just i asked me " you are a US Citizen or Resident" and answered resident and they never asked me for any documents to show them.... but i can i proof my legaly i think with drive license... and i have been doing this about a 1 year...

You're supposed to carry it however the fee to replace it if lost is very high ($450-ish) so many people have a good quality photocopy and carry that instead. As long as you have it nearby and easily accessible (the original that is) I don't think you'll have issues.

I personally don't carry mine (well have the last couple of days thanks to a job interview and I-9 verification) because I have my Iowa licence which I could only get with proof of status.

My husband doesnt carry it locally ( the store , his friends house ) but when we are out of the area , he takes it with him. He has never been asked for it but would hate to hassle to get it.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

The law says that the immigrant has to carry the Green Card on them "at all times". First I thought that's no big deal, even though I frequently read sobering stories of heartbroken people who realized that replacing a lost or stolen one not only costs $450 but takes up to 6 months. Not a problem, it's just money, right?

So I followed the law to the letter and carried the card on a chain around my neck. It was rather inconvenient when taking a shower and really got me the looks at the beach when hopping into the water. Then , during sex, it was becoming a real inconvenience to me and my wife who had the card always in her face when I was on top. As a man, there is only one place to carry it out of sight, when naked, but I felt that was pretty kinky. Can't even imagine how gay males do that. From that point on I realized that the law is bullsh*t and left the card in the safe.

Reflecting back on this, I have never been asked for my immigration status or Green Card in 19 years, with the single exception when coming back from an international flight. Hope that helps to see the light.

Put the card into the safest place you have access to.

No don't carry it with you UNLESS traveling abroad. Remember NO ONE IS GOING TO ASK FOR YOU IMMIGRATION STATUS unless you traveling abroad and coming back to US.

I know it states in the welcome letter that you need to carry it with you. they say that so you'll lose it and apply for a replacement card and pay some 400 dollars fee.
