The Sickness of Our Universities—and the Cure
TBoneTX replied to TBoneTX's topic in Current Events and Hot Social Topics
Matt Taibbi hits a home run. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ America's colleges are hoarding billions — and yet still cry poor as Trump targets federal funding Twenty years ago, maybe even ten, I'd have found stories about the administration cutting grants to universities and detonating thousands of campus-related jobs horrifying. But the education sob stories now flying off the presses have a gigantic lie of omission. Take Johns Hopkins. NBC News was one of many to highlight the "grave consequences" the new administration's policies have had on the famed institution, noting "the changes will also have an economic impact in Baltimore because the university is the largest private employer in Maryland." NBC pointed out that "about half of Johns Hopkins' funding last year came from federal research dollars, according to a letter from Ron Daniels, the university's president." It seemed odd that the "largest private employer in Maryland" is half-funded by the federal "research dollars," but I shrugged and went to the Johns Hopkins website to read the Daniels letter. Warrants its own thread. Click on the report, if you dare. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A savage rupturing of our civilisation They reduced Jews to ashes. In 2023, a fascist army burnt Jews to death. The Jews' names were Ram Itamari, 56, a transportation manager, and his wife, Lili Itamari, 63, a schoolteacher. They were in their home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza in southern Israel on 7 October 2023 when the unit of anti-Semites showed up. The gunmen saw the Jews through a window so they set fire to the house. It burned at such a scorching temperature that when the Israeli authorities finally went in, they found not one trace of the couple's bodies. It took archaeologists three weeks of sifting through the soot to discover a sliver of bone. It was DNA-tested. It was them. It is the 21st century and we are searching among ash for the remains of Jews. Following decades of the cry, 'Never Again', humanity once more found itself foraging in the blackened remains of a building for the incinerated remnants of the Jews who lived there. This detail from the new UK parliamentary report on the barbarism of 7 October should chill the blood of everyone who reads it. For it is 7 October's clearest echo, among thousands of clear echoes, of the Nazi atrocities of the last century. This report leaves no doubt: 7 October was more than terrorism, more than a war crime – it was a savage rupturing of human civilisation itself. Fascinating discovery. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Archaeologists Found a Lost Roman City That Was Erased for 1,600 Years A crew working on a transit gas pipeline in Bulgaria made quite the discovery when their work unexpectedly uncovered a Roman-era settlement partially ravaged by fire. In a new study published in the Bulgarian Journal of Archaeology, experts highlight the discovery of a 4,400-square-meter settlement located in the western part of the Sredna Gora mountains. Archaeologists swiftly stepped in to take over, and found a site teeming with ancient pottery shards, coins, and other signs of life from the late Roman period (more than 1,500 years ago). This Mess Is of Your Own Making, Chief Justice Roberts [...] The number of absurdly partisan judicial orders purporting to thwart the Trump administration's executive actions — whether deporting illegal aliens, scrubbing the federal budget, laying off superfluous or unproductive federal employees, or other items that involve things purely within the purview of Article II powers under the Constitution — has only grown. We've had a federal judge order President Trump to rehire 30,000 federal employees he laid off. We've had more than one order him to spend money which violated an executive order he’d given. And over the weekend, one of the silliest and most corrupt judges in America, James Boasberg of the federal district court in Washington, D.C., actually ordered the Trump administration to turn planes around that were in the process of deporting Tren de Aragua gang members to a prison in El Salvador. This can be our Master Thread on judicial overreach. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If The Supreme Court Is Going To Ignore The Constitution, Trump Should Ignore The Supreme Court The Supreme Court's shocking decision on Wednesday to allow a D.C. district court judge to order the Trump administration to disburse $2 billion in federal grant money is a major blow to the separation of powers undergirding our constitutional system of government. But the thing about separation of powers is that they stand or fall together. All three branches of our government — legislative, executive, and judicial — have to respect the Constitution's clear separation of powers. If one of them doesn't, there's no reason that the others should. Put another way, if the Supreme Court can simply disregard the Executive branch's constitutional authority and allow it to be usurped by an inferior federal court, which is what happened, then there's no reason the Executive branch under Trump should pay any attention to what the Supreme Court says in this case, because it's trying to assert an authority it simply doesn't have. So here's what happened. [...] https://thefederalist.com/2025/03/06/if-the-supreme-court-is-going-to-ignore-the-constitution-trump-should-ignore-the-supreme-court/

Thrilling Wednesday report, see man: Had errands but got up-tied with admin stuff, stayed in casa man. Consumed no breakfast or lunch, that intense man. Attempted siesta, rather unsuccessful man. De-skooled Mini-B. for Two Guys eve, Two Guys man. Din-din was Subway*, ingest Two Guys man. *WUOC + gift card, financially savvy we man Movie night was Anchorman, OK we guess man. Many (2+1) bowls of Costco popcorn were consumed, ingest Two Guys man. These will go on next week's tally, good head start man. Wrote the RJC (Rubia JC) at half-past 1 p.m. with Thursday's lunch arrangements, organized we man. Heard nothing back, radio silence man. After Many (2x2x2 -1) hours, wrote her to cancel on basis of nonresponse, don't around-fart with us man. The RJC texted back immediately, "Didn't get message but no problem, no and no man," man. We wrote back, "Maybe we'll cross trails another time, si man," si man. She wrote, "I'm not an 'another time' kind of gal, no man. I'm deleting your number, bye man." We responded graciously but wanted to tell her otherwise, man. So nothing for Thursday unless a GCJC (Geographically Challenging JC) can swing something, no or si man. These chicas are blowing themselves out of the water with great consistency, observe we man. Errands and initial itinerarying of GSs/ESs for Thursday, presuming no GCJC man. Party with the rubias tonight, cavort we man. And that was/is our thrilling Wednesday, report we man.

This is fine. The converse is the infamous "change of mind at baggage claim" when people say they don't intend anything other than a tourist visit but they really have ulterior motives. -
