Liz Oyer was appointed as the Pardon Attorney by Merrick Garland in 2022. Oyer was not a long-time DOJ career employee – she spent most of her career as an assistant federal defender in the District of Maryland. Prior to that, she was a partner in the firm Mayer Brown in D.C., so she is a veteran of Big Law, having gone to Georgetown as an undergrad and Harvard Law School. But there was a noteworthy aspect of her dismissal that was reported by the Wall Street Journal the day after her firing – she was immediately escorted from the building by security.
