JohnSmith1234 got a reaction from Chancy in N-400 Interview After Divorce
Hello! For those curious here is my interview experience.

I arrived in time, went through security check, checked in and was waiting for 35 min before called out by an officer.  He was very nice, he also seemed shy or new, not sure. I sat down in front of him in his office. He was reviewing my case right in front of me for about 5 minutes in complete silence. Then he began with tests. The history test questions could not have been easier. Neither have reading and writing tests. Then review of the application form followed. I was asked about my marital status in the order questions appear on N-400 form. I said that I am divorced.  He said, since you are applying based on 5 years, you are fine. We continued with the remaining questions. I signed the form and thought that was it, BUT he kept sitting in front of me in total silence browsing something on his monitor for like 5 min. Then he paged the huge pile of my case (it really looked like 1000 pages or so but I have never submitted so much) and suddenly asked: what was the reason for your divorce? I answered. He continued browsing his monitor. It looked like he was new and not sure if he has to ask more. I thought he was about to call a supervisor who would continue digging deeper into my marriage. But finally he said, congratulations, your application is approved. The oath ceremony was scheduled for the same day. 45 minutes thereafter, I became a proud owner of the naturalization certificate. The bottom line, in my opinion, they do not tend to ask additional questions about your divorce but probably they must ask at least about the reason because it looked like he found it in the instructions in the very end. So good luck with your application, YOU'LL BE FINE!

I had my interview at BOS office (I reside in CT) and I'm also Divorced

I arrived 15mins early and the officer was super nice and I felt comfortable. She was on a video call with me on an iPad to conduct the interview.

We started with the civics test. I was asked 6 questions and got all 6 correct.

Who was the first President? What is the name of the Vice President of the United States now? Who lived in America before the Europeans arrived? What is the name of the Speaker of the House of Representatives now?  When is the last day you can send in federal income tax forms?  What is one responsibility that is only for United States citizens? We then moved to the reading test. She printed a piece of paper on the printer and asked me to read what it said
"Who lives in the White House?"

Then we moved to a writing test. She printed a piece of paper on the printer and asked me to write
"The President lives in the White House"

She then told me I passed the test and asked me questions about my application. For the people who are divorced, in my case they didn't ask me for any supporting documents (I did walk with my divorce papers but they didn't ask for it). She asked me what is my ex spouse full name and what month and year we got divorce. She asked me if I traveled outside the USA in the past 5 years and where. My date of birth, address and phone number. Then we moved to the yes and no questions that you fill out on your N-400 application (she just basically repeated all the questions and I answered exactly how I wrote it on the form).

After that, she basically printed a form on the printer and told me congratulations she is recommending for my application to be approved. I was so excited, then she said today you will be doing your oath ceremony, I was sooooooo HAPPY! I did the oath ceremony and got my Naturalization paper same day. the entire process took about 30mins or less. I am glad the journey is finally over and I wish you all the best. I am applying for my passport on Friday.

No, because my divorce was final at the time of filing which could be concluded based on the divorce decree date stamp and the date of divorce on N-400 form.

My interview letter also states 2 hours - I thought it was due to same-day oath ceremonies.

No difficulties or bias. Only question IO had was if it was "a real marriage" and the birth certificates of our children put that question to rest.

I brought proof that I was current on my alimony obligations, but he didn't ask to see it or collect it. Interview was scheduled two weeks later for an oath the following month.

It just really depends on the field office.   I know people from January who are just getting biometric appointments.

Same. but I feel like the proper way to 'honor' such questions is to reply in the logical manner you'd expect considering the wealth of context.

here's my reply to the OP.

    "Maybe. Maybe not. It depends."

I looked at her old posts...it seems her husband had a very lengthy AP back in Moscow. I think he must have some government connection (or past government connection) or did work that merited having such a long AP. Of course he was eventually approved, but a GC is not citizenship. OP didn't reveal what the lengthy AP was all about, but I suspect whatever caused the citizenship delay is related.

Yeah that’s fine - take that to a notary and have them notarize it. Bring both the copy you received from the court and the notarized copy with you. That’s exactly what I did.

Original would work as well. I scanned my originals and attached them to my online application, then took the originals with me to my interview (which I wasn’t asked for).

The point I was trying to make, but not very clearly, is that a simple photocopy isn’t adequate if they do ask to see it at interview. It needs to be sufficiently official that you could use it to obtain a marriage license. If your state uses raised or embossed seals for example, you need the one with the raised or embossed seal.

In fact, I think I misspoke - a certified copy may or may not be accepted. An original one would be.

If you guys have kids yes they will ask for child support and other financial agreement. I had them with me on the interview and yet I got hit with a RFE asking for these specific documents as well as proof of child support payment (checks, direct deposits, or any other verifiable source) and a notarized sworn affidavit from your ex saying you’re not in arrears. The more info you give/have ready the smoother it will be. Good luck!

I provided just the certified copy of the divorce decree for both mine and my now husbands prior marriages. So one from the USA and one from the UK. No one asked me for anything else and while I took them for my n400 interview, I wasn’t asked to show them.

I would say yes to all of them. You also need to provide documentation since the fine is more than $500.

imo it's considered an offense since one of the potential penalties for being uninsured is jail time.

Its all depends on the officer and whats in the file. I was married for 16 years and two kids and divorced but officer asked me several questions regards to previous marriage. I ended up withdrawing the N400 due to issue with maintain continuously stays in the country requirement which I did not qualify for it.
Anyway I reapplied again after two years the officer did not even asked me a single question other than N-400 civic and history questions, It last only 20 mins interview and received approval on the spot.

Like I said its all depends on the circumstances around the cases.

I have applied and approved based on 5 years rule and also divorced. All IO asked was my marital status and the date of divorce. I've also heard different stories and prepared to answer any questions might come up however IO did not ask any extra marriage questions just confirming the information that is already on my application.
