Shiran, thanks for always being a voice of reason.  We plan to show up with some photos, copies of utility statements, bank statement, proof she is an authorized user on credit cards, health insurance card, originals of birth certificates/divorce decrees, our certified marriage certificate and passports.  Just for the heck of it.  Who knows how much of this we will need when the time comes.  Everything we bring will be organized into a nice binder.

Other than that we're bringing our physical bodies and will answer questions as asked.  After the interview we're going to the North End for some coffee and cannolis.

You can renew it within 180 days til it expires. Based on your timeline, you still enough time to do it around june 2020. And yes, you'll likely get 10 years GC since you've been married since 2016. I'm curious, what took you so long to file AOS?

Yes, renewals are also free. https://www.uscis.gov/system/files_force/files/form/i-485instr.pdf Page 16: "If you properly file Form I-485 and pay the required fees, you may file Form I-765 and Form I-131 without paying additional fees. You may file these forms together, or if you choose to file Form I-765 or Form I-131 separately, you must also submit a copy of your I-797C, Notice of Action, receipt as evidence that you filed and paid for Form I-485." My recent renewal was free.

No, they're all processed at NBC. You'll see several cases faster than yours, and several slower than yours. Despite that you filed the same day.

Someone explained it very well in another thread - it's like going to the grocery store and you end up in different check-out lanes. Even if you get there at the same time, your lane might move faster or slower than someone else's.

It's how it is with USCIS, you can't compare with other cases as your case might end up on a desk of someone who works super fast, or on another desk where someone only works part-time, got sick or whatever that slows the process down.

Here is the LONG answer but it will get you what you need.  I-94 is valid for 90 days from POE.  You need 14 days remaining on the I-94 to apply for your SSN, otherwise you have to wait until you have your EAD (Employment Authorization Document, I-765 when you file the I-485) or green card.

As a K-1 Visa Holder you are eligible to receive a SSN upon producing a valid I-94 (unexpired). Do not wait until you only have a few weeks left until your I-94 expires to file for a SSN. Many SSA (Social Security Administration) offices will not allow you to file for a SSN if your I-94 is about to expire (generally 14 days prior to the expiration on your I-94). On the other hand, you should also not file for a SSN too soon either.

You should wait 2 weeks after you arrived in the US before applying for a SSN. UPDATE: It's been reported recently that you no longer need to wait 2 weeks till you are in the SAVE database that you can go the next business day. If you go too soon your record of arrival will not be in the SAVE-ASVI system yet (what is SAVE), and it will require manual verification from the USCIS. As this will add weeks to the period it takes to process the SSN, it is advisable to attempt to wait the two weeks to be safe. If you have waited the 2 weeks and they tell you they cannot verify your arrival record via the SAVE database, then personally return on another day to have them search again -- thus eliminating the manual verification (you don't want to do the manual verification as it adds so much more time to the process).
To apply for a SSN you will need to go to your local SSA office and bring the documents below. These documents are proof of your eligibility to file for a SSN:
The SS-5 form  download and complete the application (they have some at the office if you forget). Your Passport (with the K-1 Visa attached) Your valid I-94 Another form of valid ID (birth certificate will do nicely) You should also print and bring the document RM 10211.530 , in the event that the agent is not knowledgeable that K-1/K-2 are eligible to receive a SSN.  https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211530
Make sure to bring all the documents above because some offices have staff that are not aware that a K-1 Visa Holder is eligible to file for a SSN. A friendly reminder is a nice thing to have -- if not you could be turned away incorrectly
Once you have successfully applied for your SSN, the SSN card will come in the mail in about 2 weeks.
K2 visa holders must first have a work permit (EAD) to get a social security number.
    After marriage
Carry your marriage certificate to the social security office to get the social security card in the new name. If you applied for a social security number before marriage, you can go back to the social security office after marriage and get your name changed on your social security card.
The social security card will be marked “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH USCIS AUTHORIZATION”.  That means, you need to get your EAD first before you can actually work.  Hopefully, when you submitted your AOS you included the EAD. If not you will now need to submit the paperwork for an EAD prior to working.

We got the confidential license for us, there is no requirement on how long you have to live together, so as long as you are living together.
You have to choose your new name then, or else I think you might have to pay and go to court if you want to change the name later, not sure how that works, they just told us that you have to choose your new name now if you want to change it.
If you choose this license, nobody can search on the internet and steal your information, if you choose the public license anyone can search and see your license with all your information on it. For me, like to keep my information private, I've already had my identity stolen so I've had enough of that.

T.Yang reacted to D&Sev in Public Vs. Confidential Marriage License in Ca - K1 Visa
    Hello Visa Journey Folks,
My fiance and I are going to get married soon in CA. When I went to sign up for the marriage license, it gives me the option of public license or confidential. I did some research and turns out in Ca you can choose confidential license, which makes it so no one (except bride and groom) can look up the marriage records. I'm a fan of limiting public information online, so I think the confidential license sounds appealing.
My question is, will there be any problems when I apply for my adjustment of status (AOS) with this confidential marriage license? Will it put up any red flags in the mind of USCIS, or is it the same as the public license? I just want to make sure I don't run into any issues down the line. BTW my fiance is here on a K1 visa.
    Thanks for the help!

AP is only issued for one year. 90 days before expiry date you may file for renewal if you haven’t received your greencard yet.

I suggest you apply for AOS, EAD, and AP.........your spouse might have a reason to travel (unknown circumstances)........it costs nothing if filed with the AOS.

@T.Yang Hi, we're on the same boat.  My NOA2 expiry was 25 March 2018 but I received packet 3 on 25 July.  As I've read on the site, the CO can automatically extend the validity of NOA2.

You're fine. The expiration should be auto-extended by the embassy as soon as you took action on your case. If you had done nothing, yes it would expire but the embassy understands interview dates sometimes aren't available, medical scheduling and all takes time, and some aren't done  until after the NOA2's expiration and all.

Congratulations on receiving the packet3!!!! You don’t need to call the embassy for extension. They will automatically extend it. My noa2 expired last July 2 but was able to schedule for an interview last July 26. I had my interview with no issues and I didn’t contact the embassy for any extension.

I did try a couple of times. I sent the UAE US Embassy a numerous emails requesting for the packet3 as it worked for others in the past. However, all I received was an automated reply. I tried to proceed with the interview without it thinking that it has been two months already since they’ve received it but they turned me away 😔. It took them 2 1/2 months to send us the packet3.
