I read a similar story on another forum. The only difference is the Guy’s wife wanted her mother to stay. It was obviously a ruse her and her mother planned to get her here.
 
He stated he bought a return ticket for the MIL and attempted to drive her to the airport. Said the MIL threw such a huge tantrum and caused such a scene they refused to let her enter the gate.
 
This is why we say a letter from a US citizen guaranteeing that a visitor will return to their home country is worthless. Ultimately, you can’t force someone to leave.

I get it, but please keep in mind he is a typical New Yorker (and by that I mean NYC).  My apologies to my friends and family in upstate NY.

Want to share the experience of a close friend of mine.  He and his family are Uzbek.  They have lived here in the US for more than 10 years.  For many years they tried to get his mother a tourist visa for her to come and visit.  She was denied, but they didn't give up.  They had her reapply probably every 3 or 4 months.  About two years ago she was successful (got the right CO?) and came to visit the family.
 
She never went back!    And that is why it is so difficult to get the visa.

My previous auto was a Camry hybrid.  Although not a really exciting car, it was a rock solid comfortable sedan that got great gas milage and was typically Toyota reliable.

Had a somewhat similar problem many years ago with an issue on my fiancees daughters visa.  Fortunately I was in Moscow to make sure things were correct.  Had to leave her passport and a few other documents including a new delivery payment (DHL at the time) at a box at an Embassy annex.  I too was a little worried but it all worked out.  As I recall it was an inside location and I was able to confirm with someone there that I was leaving it in the correct place.
 
It all worked out.
