GOP rep says illegal migrants sent ‘pallets’ of hard-to-find baby formula

You just can't make this stuff up.  :bonk:  So maybe the mothers in this area can go into Mexico and then cross back and demand to be sent to to the detention center.

Starving American Babies Disguise Selves As Ukrainian Soldiers In Hopes Of Getting $40 Billion In Federal Aid

KYIV—This Wednesday, reports poured in that thousands of babies have been smuggling themselves into Ukraine dressed as Ukrainian soldiers. The refugee infants say they are seeking leftovers from the federal aid Biden has sent to the war-torn country.

“Waah waah waaaaah!” Baby translators at the border were able to render one newborn’s helpless wails into English for reporters. “This baby says he's a battle-hardened Ukrainian commando and he wants some formula.”

Mom Switching Baby Formula Escalates Baby's Health Issues

Colon expressed further frustration at people who are attempting to financially exploit the formula shortage, buying products in bulk and reselling them online for around triple the price. She has been lucky, however, as family members in other states have been able to mail her formula bought in areas where the shortage has been less severe.

"It's so unfair, we hardly have any on the shelves, but now people who don't need it are buying them just to resell them for more money," Colon vented.

The formula shortage began in late 2021 when it was among the many products impacted by severe global supply chain issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In recent weeks, the issue has escalated in severity following a recall of several products produced by Abbott Nutrition and the shutdown of one of its factories in Michigan. The recalled formulas were linked to the hospitalizations of numerous infants and the deaths of two.

I'm not entirely sure how we expect the government to solve the problem of baby formula. Ingredients to make the formula is undergoing a global supply chain issue and the largest manufacturer decided it would be better to spend money elsewhere instead of fixing broken down critically needed devices that kept the formula contamination free. The company has been very slow to acknowledge or fix the problem, so what can we do besides fine them? Importation of such formula from outside this country is nearly impossible due to safety regulation. Studies show there has also been a bit of a baby boom this year, and mothers are not breastfeeding which increases demand. Meanwhile, you can go to my local town facebook page and find posts of persons that have been hoarding and stealing formula and are trying to make some hot $$$'s.

Don't you know that literally every issue is the president's fault when the "other party" is in office (even when the problem in question is global)? 😂

Both sides do this. If the president actually had that much control I would be very concerned, regardless of who was in office.

Yes, both sides do it. The Covid pearl clutching in 2020 was just as extreme.  That being said, the current administration does share some blame here.  The shortage of baby formula was increasing back in the Fall of 2021 associated with the atrocious supply chain issues partially caused by Covid policies.  Then in February, the largest plant making this formula was essentially shut-down by this Administration's FDA, and is still shut-down three months later greatly impacting the US supply.  Now initially this plant was shut-down based on a few suspected cases of contamination that has since been determined to not have come from this plant.  How does it take 3+ months to determine this issue and yet the plant is still shut-down.  Then of course the Democrat led Congress has been more worried of the January 6th Committee, the Ukraine, or anything else instead of working on eliminating barriers to be able to get this formula from other sources overseas.  Of course now that this has become a big story and we are seeing desperate mothers and fathers searching for formula, we start seeing the action that should have been happening since at least November/December of 2021.

This Administration deserves the criticism, just as the last Administration deserves the criticism heaped on it from the Left/Dems/MSM in 2020.

The way I understand it is we could allow floods of perfectly safe formula into the country but can't because... regulation stuff which is funded/lobbying by the two main manufacturers that kind of have a chokehold? CBP regularly gets 'illegal' shipments in cargo or mail and tosses the stuff. This article talks a lot about it, including the regulation hurdles from the previous administration and kept in place by the current one. https://reason.com/2022/05/09/americas-trade-and-regulatory-policies-have-contributed-to-the-baby-formula-shortage/

No worries.  Joe's hand picked mouthpiece at the FDA says there is only a distribution problem.

FDA head insists baby formula shortage caused by ‘distribution’ issues, not lack of supply

Despite his agency shutting down the nation’s largest baby formula factory for months, the head of the Food and Drug Administration on Monday blamed a “distribution problem” for empty store shelves across the US, as lawmakers fumed about a lackluster federal response to the crisis.

“I don’t want this to sound in any way like we’re not concerned about the parents that are struggling to find formula for their children,” FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said on CNN. “That’s definitely happening in parts of the country. But you know, the number of stock on shelves is about 90% before … the recall, and it dropped to about 79% at its lowest, and we’re on the way back up now.”

Califf insisted that “there is formula out there” and blamed the shortages on a February recall by supplier Abbott Nutrition of name-brand formulas produced at its plant in Sturgis, Mich.

Are you suggesting the babies not at the border should die ?  See how absurd that was

Your response is absurd. All babies deserve to be fed. Everyone deserves to have enough food to live.

Babies at the border being fed does NOT EQUATE to other babies dying. However, babies at the border don't have parents that can drive out of state to obtain formula or buy off of Facebook or go to a foodbank or any of those options. Babies at the border that aren't directly provided formula WILL DIE if they do not have breastmilk as an option.

If food in general was in short supply I would still expect prisoners, detainees, and institutionalized people to be fed.
