How to fill out employment field on I-134 if unemployed?

Obviously we have a joint sponsor who is employed and can sponsor us no problem, but we have been living off of savings for the last year. The affidavit only has two options, employed and self-employed, but what about young couples being sponsored by a third party? The main sponsor still has to fill out an I-134, but how to do that if unemployed?

Any suggestions welcome! Thanks!

Use "N/A" in that section....

BTW, only the new immigrant is sponsored...not the US citizen.

Thanks! We will write in ink "N/A, check part 7", since there is no correct box. We will also include a short description in the end, "Currently unemployed, with job offers contingent upon return to the United States. Using joint sponsor who meets income requirements."

and issue himself a 1099?   He isn't employed.....the correct answer is "N/A".

Incorrect

He is living off his savings.  1099 that's silly, I know many people who are self employed and never get a 1099, I do close to million per year in sales and never see a 1099.

Back in my younger days I would stop working for extended periods and just live off my savings, I considered myself self employed

Irrelevant...He isn't in sales....he isn't employed.......If he was self-employed, he would have to attach tax returns for that "income", (as applicable) to the I-134.

Self Employed set there own schedule and works when they want to.  You don't have to file taxes if you make zero income during a year.  If you have no income for a tax year you are not required nor obligated to file a tax return.

The OP, himself, says he is UNEMPLOYED..  "N/A" is the proper entry for the employment section...

That’s a pretty inaccurate and vague description. I was working shifts, set my own schedule and worked when I wanted to without being self employed

So in our case, you would also put down N/A since the only two options are employed and self-employed, but my fiance is absolutely not currently employed? And would you recommend writing it in ink next to the boxes since neither answer applies to us? Thanks!

That wouldn't be correct. Self employed would mean the savings are earned income, and they're not.  They are assets, but not income.

I wouldn’t write it on the form. Does this form have an additional information section? If so, add it there. If not, make a brief note separate from the forms.

No, it doesn't have any other options. Only one box for employed and another for self-employed. Not even retired or on disability or anything like that. I'm worried leaving it blank will cause it to get denied.. But I can't seem to find a straightforward answer anywhere on the internet.
