But what can be done, really?   The forest owners are losing money, or barely breaking even, and there are not enough sawmills to keep up with demand.  I think this will continue to be an issue for at least 2-3 years.

There are more than enough sawmills to keep up with demand because this issues has been going on for at least a year now. Many land owners are being turned down because their trees are to big to be cut.

Not what I have read.  Mills shut down last year due to covid, DIY projects increased, and the lumber in the supply chain was used up.  With fewer sawmills producing lumber, we are now in a shortage scenario.  And it's not like new sawmills are cheap to buy for startups.  The trees exist already, but not enough mills to process it.  I have watched interviews the past couple of months with land owners (they are losing money too), and their trees are just waiting to be cut, when enough mills can increase their capacity.

As to trees being too big; maybe for some operators?  But certainly not for all.

Nation Trying To Remember What Happened Around 100 Days Ago When All These Crises Started

U.S.—According to reports from across the nation, Americans everywhere were trying to remember what exactly happened approximately 100 days ago when everything went to heck.

Confronted with multiple crises, an increasingly divided populace, rapid inflation, abysmal employment numbers, gas shortages, and turmoil in the Middle East, Americans all agreed that all these things seemed to flare up starting near the end of January. As Americans are known for being very introspective, always wanting to trace their flaws to the root causes so they never repeat those mistakes, people around the nation tried to think back to what happened about 100 days ago.

What I was referring to about trees being to big is that there are some Canadian companies that has been buying up many of the sawmills in the South. Once the sawmills are acquired everything is then calibrated to accept a trees with the most common diameters. If any tree is to big then those mills can not accept them at all, and they are mashed up into paper. There is actually more than enough trees online ready to be cut but tree farmers are being paid pennies while the sawmills soak up the profits.

Here is a good article from the WSJ that goes into detail about it:

The leading paragraph from your 2nd link:

Quote

North America’s sawmills can’t keep up with demand, which has sent wood prices on a meteoric rise. Don’t expect new mills to start popping up though.

What I said above, that you seemed to disagree with:

The current sawmills in place cannot refill the lumber pipeline currently, and starting up a new sawmill is an expensive prospect, especially with what will most likely be a short ROI period.  I'm just glad I didn't start building anything last year.

I am not really diagreeing with you but I think we are looking at this at two different directions. The saw mills are running at full capacity and the sawmill companies are enjoying the increased profits due to the shortage because they are raking in the profits. So they have no need nor will they actually open up or build a new one in order to help out with inventory.

More Fentanyl Seized At The Border So Far This Year Than All Of 2020

MAY 19, 2021 By Gabe Kaminsky

U.S. Customs and Border Protection confiscated more fentanyl in the first half of 2021 than in the last three years.

CBP seized 6,494 pounds of the drug between October 2020 and April 2021, according to recently released data.  Nearly 2,000 more pounds of fentanyl have been seized by CBP officials compared to last year amid the southern border surge.  [...]

Biden Tells Unamused U.S. Coast Guard Graduates They Are 'Really Dull

MAY 19, 2021 By Gabe Kaminsky

While speaking at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy commencement ceremony Wednesday, President Joe Biden scolded the class for not clapping.

"You are a really dull class," Biden said.  "Come on, man. Is the sun getting to you? [...]"  [...]

What a dope, and then he cannot admit he is not funny and blame the graduates for not understanding his senile speak.  Not to mention the fact that he was just copying Reagan, and Reagan got it right in 1988 when he was in the early stages of Alzheimer's.
