Hey guys, so I emigrated here in March and I’m missing a lot of English food, specifically British cheddar cheese. I know Publix has a U.K. section and sometimes has some cheeses and I’ve also found cheese in Aldi and Lidl but I was wondering if there’s any other stores that sell English foods? We’re taking a trip soon to somewhere which has a lot more stores so looking to visit any that might have this. Thanks in advance!

Costco, also look for speciality Cheese Wholesalers with a counter, there is one in Colorado.

What state are you visiting?

Sorry I should've clarified, we'll be visiting Charleston in SC, still the same state but just has a lot more stores than the town where I'm living!

Cheese is one thing I struggle with the most!  I found some really good UK cheddar in Trader Joes (and, by the way, their chocolate is the closest to UK that I've found).  They also have some in my local Shoprite but it's really expensive.  Wegmans also have some UK things (I don't have one close and didn't look at cheese but did find some Branston Pickle!!).  I find that the sharpest cheddar you can get here is still pretty mild, has a different texture and why is it yellow / orange?!

Try Boars Head black wax cheddar. It would be sliced by the deli section people if they carry Boars Head brand. Ask for a sample. There is also red wax cheddar. You might like those. I used to get that before I found a new cheddar. There’s also a cheddar called Old Croc that might be in your grocery case with the already packaged cheese regular cheese like Kraft and the Wisconsin types. Not as expensive as the imports where I live.

Look for cheddars aged 18 months if you want that strong bite.

I only discovered this site a few weeks ago and it's been great for keeping me sane... and now I have cheese recommendations!? It's the gift that keeps on giving! Thank you!

When I first arrived in Texas, the deli guy at my Kroger grocery cut me samples of every cheddar he had in the case. I went with the Boar’s Head black wax (it’s wrapped in a coating of black wax). He also gave me the tip to look at the “aged for” 12-18 months.  I think the Boar’s Head may only be aged 9 months.

New house and new store and I found this one, a store brand cheese of H-E-B which is only in Texas I think. It’s a white cheddar aged 12 months. It was cheaper than Boar’s Head, but the price has crept up.  https://www.heb.com/product-detail/h-e-b-deli-artisan-aged-white-cheddar-cheese/1109287

Old Croc extra sharp is aged 18 months and readily available at my grocery, but falls into a pricey category.

I’ve found the longer I stay, the more I get used to local foods. Love great beef, Mexican food, and BBQ brisket.

My husband would say that all American cheese is not mild enough. He does like Cabot White Oak cheddar, which is white and has a flavor that doesn't offend him. Most of Cabot cheese and Kerrygold cheese is pretty good and they do have some interesting varieties. Wegmans does usually have some British cheese and Safeway sells some British and Welsh imports.

Forgot to say, some things remain British even after 12 years.   When I get BBQ brisket and make sandwiches, I skip the BBQ sauce and use Colman’s mustard. I call it my Yellow BBQ Sauce. 😋

I struggled to find good cheeses when I was visiting my husband last year. Thanks for suggestions here, I am hoping that I won't miss cheese as much when I move to the US permanently.

The Trader Joes cheese section is the best we've found too for Uk style cheese. And it's so cheap! Agreed about it being more mild. That said, their cheddar and onion is one of the nicest cheeses I've had
