Hi,

Others have discussed the sponsor situation, but I wanted to ask about why he cannot return to Russia?  I understand there is a travel ban, but I believe spouses of Russian citizens can travel.  They need to make arrangements with the Russian consulate, I believe, but if his visa is still current he should be able to travel.

Hi, we contacted the American embassy and they said that there are no exceptions American citizens can come to Russia at the moment (even with spouses and children in Russia). Could you please point me to a resource online because we keep trying to find anything about boarders but can't find anything about American citizens being allowed to come

Merely being unemployed will not have any impact on the success or failure of your application. My husband was unemployed at the time too. The consular Officer will look at the entire picture.

But getting approved by the embassy is one thing. The reality of life here with an unemployed husband is something else. How does he propose to feed you and provide healthcare for you? Do you have a job waiting for you here?

He is planning to get a job once we permanently move together. I'm also pretty qualified in terms of education and job experience so I was hoping to find a job in America before we move and apply for ssn etc

Check this post:

On page 2 there is a write up by @David & Olga.  You need to contact the Russian embassy in Washington.

Edit:  Last post from @zolotinka:

Now for entering you need:

1) COVID test dated no later than three days prior to arrival in Russia

2) a copy of an internal Russian passport of your spouse

3)  a copy of your marriage certificate. Since you plan to marry in the third country you need to research  about an apostille and translation both in English and Russian (I’ve read people needed to do it but I have no experience).

She was replying to someone who asked about marriage in a third country.  For the OP, her husband would need either the Russian marriage certificate or (if not married in Russian), then a translated and apostille'd marriage certificate.

Please do not.

You need to contact the Russian embassy in Washington.  The US embassy will just say spouses are generally not allowed to enter, and to contact the Russian embassy for special permission.

It is useless to talk to the US embassy because Department of State keeps Level 4 Do not travel alert for Russia. The point is for your husband to cross Russian border so you need to talk to the Russian Embassy in Washington and look for Russian rules of crossing the border.

Here is the list from Russian Ministry of foreign affairs‘ site (spouses are mentioned in the 4th paragraph)

My husband called to the Embassy in Washington around a week ago and they confirmed he is able to enter Russia.

The job market in the US is hyper competitive right now, even for qualified individuals. I would make sure if you guys chose to go on with him being unemployed that you have enough savings for months or that the joint sponsor can take care of y’all.

You won’t be able to apply for ssn etc from outside the states it will be issued to you after you arrive.. same when it comes to saying your legally permitted to work in the states, your not until after you’ve entered

you said he’s back here in the states and that he can’t get back to Russia at the moment and that your case is currently at NVC... Who’s he living with? His father?

has it occurred to you that you may have progressed past NVC stage before he’s able to return? In which case he may as well get a job here now since you’ll have to enter within 6 months of your medical anyway..

kinda seems pointless not to mention expensive his returning if it’s only going to be for a few months. In my opinion he’d be better off looking for a job now since businesses are reopening and putting that money to establishing your home here in the us ready for your arrival or will it be up to his father to support you both?

Absolutely agree, there’s so many people out of work, employers can be fussy about who they hire, not to mention the whole amping of America first.. I’m not being discriminate but in reality new immigrants aren’t generally the top of the hiring list irrespective of qualifications held by them when put up against an equally qualified American with American experience

Explain to us what is correct.  I am interested.

You can use assets. And get aproved. I’m talking based on my experience and based on information from real immigration attorneys. Not based on scary and negative comments in the forums. Every case is different but it’s doesn’t  to say anywhere that sponsor can not be unemployed.

In the context (see first post) of petitioner being unemployed and being supported by beneficiary overseas (as opposed to supporting himself) the comments were neither scary nor negative.

This guy needs a job and a US domicile soonest.
