SAN FRANCISCO — In the latest sign of how dramatically the coronavirus pandemic is altering the social landscape, even the liberal San Francisco Bay Area this week banned reusable grocery bags as a sanitary measure, dismaying recycling advocates who say durable sacks should still be allowed at stores.

The provision was among a host of lifestyle changes imposed Tuesday by six Bay Area counties in a rewrite of their first-in-the-nation March 16 order that required millions of residents to shelter at home. The counties have been credited with taking early actions that may have helped slow the spread in California.

Paper bags kill trees; plastic bags choke sea life and foul the environment; therefore, carry out everything in your hands.

And if it's worth less than $950, steal it.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

In my younger days my Mother and Grandmother realised that one thing I was good at was carrying shopping bags and so I garnered a lot of experience, and they did not use disposable bags, for the life of me I forget which ones they did use.

Well, we're still allowed to use reusable bags down here but we need to do bagging ourselves if we do. It's such force of habit that I always bring some in with me (I have a few ones that crush down very small in my handbags), so I use them. I don't mind the bagging but the first time it happened last week I was like: you expect me to bag for myself? And then I thought, wow, nice privilege Layla.

Yes, if I worked at a grocery store, I would never touch a reusable bag.  They are cesspools of germs.

I did, but it was a long time ago. I freaked me out at first! I thought: are you waiting for something?  Oh dear.

I unlearned the good habit of doing for myself.

There really ought to be compulsory training as a entry requirement.

Entry to the UK? Not a bad idea. That and understanding how to queue properly, with stoicism but also a little bit of commiserating moaning. Also plumbing issues, like the ins and outs of specific toilets: is this one I have to give a bit of a jiggle on the handle? Or showers: do I need to wait 10 minutes for the water to heat up?

So many things, driving on the right side, not talking on Public Transport, peas, the list is endless.

Mine are vinylized and I wipe them down frequently, but still there are risks not worth taking today.  I am more concerned about what is on that conveyor belt that has had communication with the world. I hope there is a UV sanitizer underneath there.

I use mine if I go in the store, but I always load them myself. I don't ever use them for anything that would obviously contaminate, like meat etc.

I still think using grocery pickup (if possible) is a better option for avoiding exposure. More important to avoid people than grocery bags, IMO.
