It Might Be Time To Cut My Right-Wing, Trump-Loving In-Laws Out Of My Kids’ Lives

Well I support inclusion and diversity so not sure how it could arise, I would like to think she could be sufficiently self aware to appreciate that not everybody supports her views and that somebody with different views is not necessarily bad.

I certainly would not publish a long diatribe in the public domain, she even liked her web site. We do not know much about her In Laws or Husband, we do know a lot about her.

The In Laws will be upset but will survive, my sympathies are with her Husband.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

So let us say that your inlaws say something of great offense to your wife. Perhaps they actually do say something that reaches the level of vile racism to you (whatever fits into your criteria for that). How would you approach that?

I will give you a pass for the Gender assumption this time, just be more aware in future.

Using you example and assuming I am male my in laws would be her Parents so I would be supportive, not sure what else?

Nice to know you'd never stand up to protect your loved one, but maybe that's a part of what's wrong in relationships these days.

Forgive me if I'm skeptical of your claim though.

I'll be sure to use a gender neutral reference in the future. Does, ''It'' suffice? Or is there a specific term you'd enjoy better?

Assuming you actually meant my Parents it would be a tricky situation to deal with as they are both dead.

Unless he agrees with his parents (over what his wife is saying), I don't think there will be an issue.

Nothing unusual in this article to me at all. Parents go through this kind of thing all the time. If someone can't be around your kids and keep their politics, religion and vices to themselves, they can stay away. It's not actually a hard thing for a parent. It's among the easiest things I had to deal with raising kids. It quite simply comes down to my house, my rules. If somebody, be it a friend, relative or stranger, comes to your home and does something you don't want, you simply say don't do that in my house. Or don't do that in front of my kids. If that is not acceptable, then it's time for them to leave.

I don't agree with my own parents politically or religiously. I'll choose carefully when to correct or remind or redirect improper conversations. Try to make conversations teachable moments, where you can illuminate or educate in a supportive way. It may not change a mind but it's a dialogue.

What if (bear with me for a moment) they are more correct than you politically?  What if you are in the wrong path?  What if you are the one who needs educating?

I don't know you, your family, nor the differences in beliefs.  But I DO know that I had differences with my parents growing up, and they were right more often than they were wrong.  And more often than I was.  Just something to consider.

Sure. I examine and re-examine this all the time. Unfortunately (and I mean that sincerely), I reach the same conclusion and it's why I'm a firm libertarian. Everyone's parents are different, and it all depends on what we each personally differ with them on. We all don't reach the same conclusions nor do we have to. I don't seek to change their minds about anything really, only so that when they make quick conclusions without considering actual facts, they stop a minute and learn how things are, rather than what is assumed. They know where I stand, and are fine with it.

Both of this is projection. There is nothing in the article that otherwise implies that.

Tell me, how would both of you approach this subject. Let us imagine your inlaws were offending you and behaving in ways around your kids you didn't approve of. What would YOU do?

Haha. I'm sure.

Send the kids to school so they can be properly indoctrinated into the Leftist/Fascist political mentality.  Seriously though, based on the article it does not sound like the kids have that much contact with the "offensive" grandparents with one in NYC and the other in Florida, so I am not really sure what the issue is here.  This article really smacks of a so called progressive intolerant leftist not liking being in anyway linked to someone they label as a conservative.  As already stated, we have no idea how much of what this author wrote is even true, or how much she embellished to soothe her wonkiness (or is it wokeness).  If she doesn't want to expose her kids to the grandparents, then fine, that happens all the time, and if it drives a wedge between her and her husband, that is something she would need to consider.

I agree with @Boiler, my in-laws would be my wife's parents.  Now if you are talking about my parents when they were both alive, then I would expect I would be aware of their hatreds and not expose my wife to them.  People don't just become racists (well, maybe some leftist do), they generally have a well known personality that can be avoided.

True, and if those “perfect strangers” start spouting rubbish similar to what these inlaws did, they tend to be looking for new jobs. I got to know most of my kids teachers pretty well though. Your opinion seems pretty strong on this Bill. Do you have any kids?

Nope, no kids, just pointing out the irony.  Now in your case you took an initiative in your kids education, not everyone does that though.
