SSN yourself vs via AOS form

IF I apply for a SSN using the AOS form, do they only issue me with a number and card once AOS is approved (after many months)?

You can’t apply for SSN using AOS form.

In the EAD form it'll ask for you if you want to get one or not while you file Together with AOS/AP.

There seems to be hot and miss success on doing so .. if you haven’t received the SSN and card within a few weeks of the  EAD, then head off to the SSA office and apply in person

The SSA. will see there if is one in process, so it won’t be duplicated.

As said, SS card will be issued after the EAD approval. Some have received their SS card before EAD, some after receiving EAD while some had to make trip to SS office just to find out it was never applied automatically by uscis.

Theoretically,  however it has happened where a duplicate card was issued,  particularly if the initial card was in a maiden name

Yes ... but ... if OP already had a SSN in maiden name , she wouldn’t need to check the box on the EAD form

I do not know as I already taken my husband to the SSA Office before we submitted our AOS packet.

Hopefully someone else may tell you.

Personally I would just go to the SSA to get it done. I would not want to risk it taking 8+ months just to get a SSN.

My wife filed for her SSN last year when she filed for AOS. USCIS forwards the form to SSA.  She received her SSN in the mail within a few days of AOS approval. SSA prefers not to issue an SSN if you are not authorized to work. While waiting for work authorization and her SSN we had to go to SSA to get a letter stating that she was not eligible for an SSN so she could present that letter in order to get a state-issued photo ID.
