Longer/indefinite time to edit posts

I was going to edit a post I made slightly over 10 minutes ago and noticed the edit option already disappeared. The time limit to edit posts should be extended or removed as there are many good reasons for editing a post beyond a few minutes and as there is already an “edited” timestamp that makes it clear to others if or when a post was last edited. Thanks.

Personally, I like the 5 minute time limit, but can see certain instances where a longer time may be useful.

I think the 5 minutes was put into place because of the potential room in the past for abuse by people "editing" long-ago made posts in their history to remove any insults, verbal assaults on members, etc. so that it's there on record for Moderators to see once any post is reported later on...especially if Moderators want to look back at one's posting history when deciding on any permanent action to be taken/thread ban/etc.

I suppose in the interim, though, if a post is past it's editing time a second post can be made by the same member noting it as a sort of "clarification" of any previous one.

Invision Community has had an edit history feature for years now so this could be enabled and used to address the issue you raised.

That would be cool...I wonder if VJ already has something like that in place and maybe regular members just don't know about it.  I know that past usernames are visible through the profile page, so maybe?  @Captain Ewok ?

Indefinite is out. You would have people going back and editing to claim "I never said that". Trust me, seen it before on other forums.

On the fence about edit history. I can see cons to that also.

Agree with @Unlockable - indefinite would just be a way for people to backtrack on what they said and thus create even more confusion in threads.

I don't think there's any edit history option here on VJ. I'd be curious to see what exactly that looks like and if it would be worth the trouble of adding.

Edit history has been stock with Invision for years so yes it should be available. Indefinite is not necessary, even extending edit time to an hour would help.

That being said, if edit history is fully enabled and not regularly purged, and the edit timestamp is kept intact and publicly visible, then an indefinite edit time becomes much less of an issue anyway.

The edit feature is long enough. Anything longer would just be abused. After 10 minutes any additional information many times would be missed as members would already be replying to the OP. 10 minutes some threads can be pages deep and full of TOS that have been edited and reedited over and over as members go on. This would than cause hours of mod work to see who attacked who and when.

Sometimes my rethoric is not as flawless as I would like, and I find that out way past the editing allowance.

It certainly affects my ego, self confidence and leaves me traumatized for a while -maybe the next 10 minutes or so-.

Leaving trace of poor eloquence is not my personal preference, so an extended editing period would be welcomed, though I can fully understand the concerns from the administrators/ moderators of the site.

Maybe an erratum for each post could be added? (Joking! 😉 But would be cool.)

:D I can usually tell how tired I was the night before when rereading some posts I've made, that don't even look like I was speaking in English. :D
